banana Solar Power Systems, Emergency Preps?
Solar power systems, wind power etc.... Is anyone on here building an alternative system for when/if the grid goes down? An EMP pulse or a solar flare aimed directly at our planet,(even a near miss) will most certainly cause havoc with our national power grid. It is well documented that our current system is wide open to failure should an event occur. It is not hardened for protection, and WILL go down in the event of a solar flare or an EMP pulse from a nuclear device. The results will be catastrophic for our nation and our way of life. The country as a whole is simply not prepared for such an event. No electricity, no water, no communications, no police protection(they will be home protecting their own), no way to get fuel, no way to get food, etc... You see where this is going. How many of us, the prepper, survivalist, mormon?, are actually making plans for an extended power outage? Be it a month, six months, years, longer. I myself have started to do the research and slowly start to aqquire the equipment to be able to have a few lights, run a fan, charge small devices. May not have cell phones or the internet so have an old CB radio to perhaps get a little local news. Yes, it is EMP protected. Just wrapped it in tin foil and tucked it in a gun safe. Probably enough? Just curious, am I the only one that is thinking this way? Anyone else doing same? This is surely a very real possibility, not if, but rather when.

RE: Solar Power Systems, Emergency Preps?
I have a wind turbine and a couple of solar panels, but I have a problem properly converting the DV voltage to AC. I've set up various charge controllers and inverters only to find that none of them work properly. I've watched video after video trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong with no luck.

Hey, dont know what inverter you're using, but I have a PEAK brand inverter. It's 1200 watts constant, 2000 watts surge and it works well, Got it from Advance Auto. Running that, a charge controller, 4 panels and 3 big deep cycle batts. Deka batts. I think? 375 AH they are. hope you aren't the only one with the foresight to make these preps. gonna be a lot of folks in the dark one of these days!

I installed a solar/wind hybrid system at my place back in '98 and it's still working great today without any problems. It has 900watts on a solar tracker with a 1,500watt Bergey wind gen. Initially started out with Trojan lead-acid batteries, then when they wore out I switched to AGM batteries, which don't require any watering. I strongly recommend Bergey wind generators due to their quality and durability.
