I have mixed feelings about this kind of thing. Recently at the Chicago Museum of Science and Technology, while wandering through the exhibits, I looked at that old plane made by the Wright Brothers, or obviously a scale facsimile....the wood was too new to be the original.

And then further down the hall, hung the war planes.

And it made me sad. Men dream. The beauty of the Wright's intention to fly was good. But look how it was twisted into something not so good.

Thus the Invention Secrecy Act whereby the gov't stops many inventors dreams.

It is sad how things that could be for the betterment of mankind, can be twisted to harm them as well. "Oh, the evil that men do..."

The P-51 Mustang is arguably the pinnacle of reciprocating engine powered flight. This one is radically modded for the Reno air races.

This one is my favorite of favorites. When I was a child they still used B-17s as air tankers for fire control from the air, and I had the privilege of seeing them up close when my dad worked for the Forest Service.

This one, the 'Aluminum Overcast', is a frequent visitor to our area and I always know when its around...no other plane sounds like a B-17!

Tough planes, too. I've seen them come in from a fire run with only two engines still working and make a perfect landing. I miss them, although the newer Orions and some others are cool to watch.

When I was a child I was absolutely convinced I was a ME-262a pilot in WWII. The feeling has waned over the years, but I still have a deep love for this craft.

So sleek , so fast! To me it's always been like a great white shark swimming through the sky.
