Something like this old beauty?

I have mixed feelings about this kind of thing. Recently at the Chicago Museum of Science and Technology, while wandering through the exhibits, I looked at that old plane made by the Wright Brothers, or obviously a scale facsimile....the wood was too new to be the original.

And then further down the hall, hung the war planes.

And it made me sad. Men dream. The beauty of the Wright's intention to fly was good. But look how it was twisted into something not so good.

I dunno. Anon

If Hitler had OK'd their use as interceptors when they were first produced instead of insisting that they be used as bombers, we might all be speaking German now, according to Adolph Galland.

So very true! It was re-tasked to something it wasn't designed for at all. They lost so many because they had to slow down SOOO slow to release payload effectively. Even so, near the end Germany had thousands of planes or parts of planes in underground factories, just no fuel or pilots to fly them anymore.

Luckily chuckle

The DC-3 first flew in 1935. Today there are still more than 400 around the world in operational service.

Galland's "Squadron of Aces" was effective, just too little too late.

Someday there will be a 100 year-old DC-3 still flying.

Wow.

RE: Some planes just get more beautiful with age
The DC-3 is my favorite too.

One night I was just out of tech school for the TN Air Guard and was living
on Brooks Rd near the airport. FedEx had just got authorization to fly much
longer routes due to the Airline Deregulation Act of 77 so they needed their
fleet of Falcon 20s to fly the long routes until their purchase of 727s got
delivered. To take the smaller Falcon 20 jet's place Fred Smith hired every
single DC-3 he could get his hands on. Most incoming flights happen at
midnight and I just happened to look out my door and saw a familiar set
of landing lights going overhead. Then another pair, then another, and
another. I got in my car and drove over to FedEx and on the tarmac beheld
a glorious site of about 30 DC-3s in all kinds of livery. The security guard
on duty was kind enough to let me gawk at them (hanging out at airports
didn't make you suspicious back then) and it was a great thing to see.
One of these days when I rich and fabulously well to do I want to own one.
It's the only reason why I'm not completely disgusted with John Travolta.
He owns his very own luxury DC-3.

He also owns a Constellation and damned big-ass 707 he keeps parked
at his house:
