The United States produces a lot of corn. because we are so productive, the price for a Bushel of Corn has fallen from about $10 a bushel in 1976 to $5 a bushel last year. (i.e. the dollar buys twice as much corn now than it did a third of a century ago.) We have a very strong currency.

Never mind that the corn has less than half the nutritional value it had in 1976. Or that the reason it is so cheap is because the US gov't used borrowed money to subsidize corn for ethanol. Or that you would be hard pressed to come up with three other things that are cheaper in US dollars since 1976.

Maybe you could help me out though. Right now I have land, tools, seeds, stored food, practical skills, a good online business, gold and silver. I'm going to be coming into a chunk of FRNs from an inheritance soon. What would you suggest I do with that strong currency? Should I hold onto them as cash, put them in the bank at interest, buy T-Bills, or invest in blue chip stocks?

Or should I buy a whole lot of corn that has been genetically modified to produce its own insecticide?

S&P Cuts Spain to BBB+, Outlook Negative

EUR/USD fell from 1.324 to 1.318 right after the announcement.

NEW YORK (Standard & Poor's) April 26, 2012--Standard & Poor's Ratings Services today said it lowered its long-term sovereign credit rating on the Kingdom of Spain to 'BBB+' from 'A'. At the same time, we lowered the short-term sovereign credit rating to 'A-2' from 'A-1'. The outlook on the long-term rating is negative.

The downgrade reflects our view of mounting risks to Spain's net general government debt as a share of GDP in light of the contracting economy, in particular due to:

The deterioration in the budget deficit trajectory for 2011-2015, in contrast with our previous projections, and

The increasing likelihood that the government will need to provide further fiscal support to the banking sector.

Consequently, we think risks are rising to fiscal performance and flexibility, and to the sovereign debt burden, particularly in light of the increased contingent liabilities that could materialize on the government's balance sheet.
