AMERICAN QUEEN at Beale Street Landing on her maiden return to Memphis. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2012.

The Memphis, Tennessee waterfront is abuzz with spectators today as Great American Steamboat Company’s AMERICAN QUEEN made her debut to what is officially her new homeport. Despite construction work at Beale Street Landing still underway to accommodate the largest and most lavish steamboat ever built, locals enthusiastically welcomed the 436 passenger vessel following her multi-million dollar restoration after the collapse of former owners, Majestic America Line in 1998.

“Today is a dream come true as we revive the fabled steamboat experience, introducing river communities to thousands of travelers, especially our hometown of Memphis,” shared Great American Steamboat Company President Jeff Krida. “The smiling faces greeting us here in the ‘Capital of Southern hospitality’ is humbling and it is no surprise most of our crew calls Memphis home.”

As the AMERICAN QUEEN approached downtown Memphis, she was met by the city’s residents and family members of the crew. The recently formed Great American Steamboat Company has hired 300+ employees from the area, including the steamboat crew, and an economic impact of $89 million is anticipated for the region.

The New Beale Street Landing will look like this when it's completed:

Looks like a grand old boat.

Will it be parked on the other side of the bridge across from the pyramid?

We have a tiny version here in Hot Springs called The Belle. It's on Lake Hamilton and has lunch and dinner cruises.

Howdy Doc..........

The new landing is further South of the Pyramid. It's at the foot of
Beale Street. My old job back in 1979, Waterways Marine, used
to be located there.

My uncle once took me on a cruise from St. Louis to Cincinnati and back on the Delta Queen. It was a most memorable experience. Would be nice to see some of these plying the great rivers again. Especially authentic ones like the Delta Queen. [Delta Queen has operated with a presidential exemption to the law prohibiting the operation of overnight passenger vessels with wooden superstructures[/quote]]

Thanks Doc, I feel a need for BBQ! But I think I'll pass on that December cruise.

There is what appears to me to be a giant steam boiler in the woods near here by my house. It's surrounded by 80-100 yr old trees. I would love to have it but I don't know how I would be able to recover it.

That one's now in Chattanooga... I've heard lots of 'it's haunted' stories about it.

Waterways used to supply the Delta Queen occasionally. It was amazing
how half our coolers and warehouse was filled with their stuff. I was
also impressed that in the crew section they had a beer dispenser
instead of a soda machine ;)
