Sulfur Finding May Hold Key to Gaia Theory of Earth as Living Organism
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/201...203100.htm

Is Earth really a sort of giant living organism as the Gaia hypothesis predicts? A new discovery made at the University of Maryland may provide a key to answering this question. This key of sulfur could allow scientists to unlock heretofore hidden interactions between ocean organisms, atmosphere, and land -- interactions that might provide evidence supporting this famous theory.

RE: Sulfur Finding May Hold Key to Gaia Theory of Earth as Living Organism
The Gaia hypothesis -- first articulated by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis in the 1970s -- holds that Earth's physical and biological processes are inextricably connected to form a self-regulating, essentially sentient, system.

One of the early predictions of this hypothesis was that there should be a sulfur compound made by organisms in the oceans that was stable enough against oxidation in water to allow its transfer to the air. Either the sulfur compound itself, or its atmospheric oxidation product, would have to return sulfur from the sea to the land surfaces. The most likely candidate for this role was deemed to be dimethylsulfide

yes it is, and were are a chemical reaction with this organism, we are the Earth/Universe trying to understand itself.

good read by the way, thanks OP.

--- Interesting find. Thanks.

I used to work maybe 100 yards from a venting sulfatara outside of Naples, Italy. -- stinky...

That wasnt the sulfur, that was Naples! The garbage man strike a lot in naples doomed

But the theory is interesting. A giant megaorganism, bound together is awesome.

how could they not think it is alive? it has things growing out of it like mad! i also think it has it's own version of a mind, or soul or whatever.

Did you know Lynn was Carl Sagan's wife? Interesting mix eh?!

Even if proven wrong, I love to think of our planet as a living organism, with sentience, as it brings with it a measure of respect.

When thinking about all the aweful stuff, we (collectively speaking) Humans do to our homeworld, there must be a lot of patience and luurve to just not bring about a mega tsunami or the like to wipe us out.

The old addage - as above so below, also gels with me in regards Gaia being a living, sentient organism. And that spans out to the other planets, and the Sun.

Add a little electric universe theory, and as I see it, these bodys have conversations, and exchange information. All-be it differently to how we do it.

Cool find OP.

NO it's not.

The Earth, as with all such similar worlds are big inert conglomerations of assorted elements and compounds upon which a vast number of living organisms exist.

The planet itself is NOT repeat NOT a living thing.

Now run along and go chase some other feel-good new-agey magical rainbow unicorn.

NO the planet and all the myrid of stuff that lives on it is most certainly NOT sentient. It does NOT think, and it has NO feelings.

It' a big dumb ball of rock and metals and many other chemical compounds that forms an nenvironment for all the assorted things that live on it and just under it's surface.

Virtually all of which (with the exception of Humans and MAYBE certain other primate and cetacean species) are also NOT sentient.

So bring on the next ass-ended vibrational delusion...

how is this new age? People believed in a god mother earth thousands of years ago...

isnt it more likely that a living organism would have produced life on earth than life coming from some sort of asteroid?
also what about all the plants growing out of this "conglomerations of assorted elements"...?
