Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said his country is in "a state of war", more than a year after the uprising against his rule began.

Addressing his new cabinet, Mr Assad said that all efforts had to be directed towards winning the war.

"Assad says Syria at war as battle reaches capital

Tue Jun 26, 2012 5:15pm EDT

BEIRUT, June 26 (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared on Tuesday that his country was at war and ordered his new government to spare no effort to achieve victory, as the worst fighting of the 16-month conflict reached the outskirts of the capital.

Video published by activists recorded heavy gunfire and explosions in suburbs of Damascus. A trail of fresh blood on a sidewalk in the suburb of Qudsiya led into a building where one casualty was taken. A naked man writhed in pain, his body pierced by shrapnel..."

He's right, Syria is in a state of war. Has been for months, so far it's been been largely 'civil' but could go international with a slight nudge.

UN mission in Syria to stay suspended
June 26, 2012

The United Nations monitoring mission in Syria will remain suspended because of the mounting conflict, a top UN official told the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Diplomats at a closed Security Council meeting quoted Herve Ladsous, UN peacekeeping chief, as saying civilians were in "increasing danger" in Syria and "conditions are not conducive to resume operations."

Watch closely the developments from the UN in relation to this.

If Rices call for binding sanctions under Chapter VII and by natural progression Article 42 gain traction, we are looking at another Joint UN-Nato action.

Russia agrees to Syria summit in Geneva
June 26, 2012

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has agreed to attend an international meeting on the Syria conflict in Geneva on Saturday,

Kofi Annan wants to hold the meeting of the major powers in Geneva in a final bid to get agreement on a political transition plan for Syria.

Annan has not yet officially announced the meeting, however, and the comments by Russia's UN envoy Vitaly Churkin are the first sign that it will go ahead.

US moves closer to joining Syria talks
Nuland rejected Iran's participation, saying: "Given its support for the regime and its continued behavior vis-a-vis Syria, we just don't see it as able to make a helpful contribution right now."

The United States wants to ensure that "all the countries and organizations around the table are committed to the Annan plan [and] are committed to a peaceful, positive transition, and so participation does matter," she said.

"Conflicting statement"? You're being much too kind.

Maybe that lying sack-of-shit State Dept. mouthpiece Nuland can tell us exactly how "helpful" the U.S. has been throughout this shitshow.

US agrees with Assad that Syria situation is “dire”
June 27, 2012 share

"Assad's comments, his observation about the situation in Syria is all the more profound because he created it, he caused it," said White House spokesperson Jay Carney.

"The brutality that is being leveled against the Syrian people is his own doing.”

Syria’s Propaganda Cloud: How the West Is Falling for Misinformation

Some of those inflows, for instance, are funding propaganda, which serves to exaggerate Syria’s genuine problems—economic and otherwise—as part of a great spectacle to sway world opinion. This includes Saudi money coming into Syria via Lebanon to fund demonstrations, with people getting $30 a day to protest—in front of cameras and microphones, of course. That isn’t to say that there aren’t many genuine demonstrators with real grievances; at the same time, the government habitually stages its own propaganda shows, also inducing people to whoop it up for the media. Such stage-management, along with fake torture videos and a host of other propaganda stunts, provide false justification for or against outside meddling, with some Europeans and certain people in Washington pushing for various military options, and a broad group led by Russia and China, but also including many in the region, calling for diplomatic solutions to the crisis.
