Rec, for all your impartiality shown before, i find you only seriously documenting the one side here. One mans reporter is another mans spy. Perhaps its an issue of the fundamental differences between a journalist and a reporter.

i still admire your tireless work, regardless.

Bump

There's another side to document here?

Someone else is going to have to go digging for evidence Marie Colvin was some kind of asset. Cheers

Sorry, let me clarify. By 'one side' i was referring to the Syrian situation. On the one hand we have a liberation movement/leadership ousting and on the other we have Regime forces/sovereignty issues. It just seemed to me that the Syrian government, trying to oust a terrorist element within their international borders, might have been as valid a viewpoint. Ref: Libya.

RE: American & French journalists killed in Syria
The deaths of Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik are regrettably sad and tragic, as is the death of any human being in a war zone.

It has happened before and when we are responsible it becomes a case of collateral damage even when the targets were carefully chosen and hit with precision!.

In the interests of a fair and impartial appraisal of this awful incident one must look back at some of the attacks on members of the press in the past.

April 1999 in Serbia, NATO targetted the HQ of Serbian TV and radio with precision munitions, killing 16 people. There was NO mistake in the targetting, it was intentional. The dead could no way be described as combatants.

November 2001 the Kabul office of Al-Jazerra was attacked by US airpower. BBC reporter NiK Gowing said he believes that the western military forces are prepared to target journalists if they get in the way. He said that representatives of the British special forces had told him: "When a war is not declared, journalists are legitimate targets where they are inconvenient."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2001/nov...fghanistan

In April 2003 the Baghdad HQ of Al-Jazeera was bombed by US aircraft, killing cameraman Tareq Ayyoub and seriously wounding another journalist. This happened even after the TV station had given the exact co-ordinates of their offices to the USA to avoid any accidental military strikes.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2003/apr...ndthemedia

There was an alleged memo revealing U.S. President George W. Bush's apparent plan to bomb the Qatar headquarters of Al-Jazeera in Doha! This was during the horrific US assault on the Iraqi city of Fallujah where only Al-Jazeera reported on the dreadful casualties inficted on civilians by US forces.
The "memo" story was gagged and silenced under the UKs Official Secrets Act.

http://www.ifex.org/united_kingdom/2005/...eera_memo/

Also in Apr 2003 a US M1 Abrams tank fired a carefully aimed shell at a hotel FULL of journalists. The ironically named Palestine hotel was hit and 2 people were killed, Taras Protsyuk who worked for Reuters and Jose Couso who was covering the Iraq war for Spanish TV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_8,_20..._U.S._fire
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,83503,00.html

There is also the tragic case of ITN reporter Terry Lloyd who was killed by US forces in March 2003. Fred Nerac, who was working as a cameraman, was also caught in the attack and is still missing, believed dead.
At the inquest into the death of Terry Lloyd the verdict of unlawful killing by U.S. forces was recorded. Though the US troops involved were identified, no charges were ever brought against them.

I hope that puts todays sad news into some historical context. Terrible things happen to journalist in war-zones, and WE have been just as guilty too, however uncomfortable that reality makes some people.

Sorry for the loss of Human life, but you cant really call them reporters, at best they were propoganda spreaders, not journalists in the "real" sense of the word.

I am sure once upon a time they probably were before they were indoctrinated into the system that killed them.

End

"The system that killed them".......
Ummm - when you go to places of conflict, war, riots - this is what happens. And you knew these men did you? You speak of them like you do.

Not really journalism when he used terms like "so called rebels", "phoney rebels".

More like activism. He promotes his own view.

Homs, Baba Amr neighborhood: American journalist Marie Colvin and French journalist Remi Ochlik killed under the rubble after the house they were in was shelled. [22 Feb 2012]

One of Colvin's last interviews on BBC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-17120484

Journalist Marie Colvin in Homs: "I saw a baby die today"

Parts of the Syrian city of Homs are being bombarded by shells in what witnesses are describing as the heaviest attack in days.

Sunday Times reporter, Marie Colvin, is the only British newspaper journalist in Homs.

The footage at the start was filmed by cameraman Paul Conroy on 17 February

REC: Let me know if the BBC video doesn't work in your country and I make a copy.

Or fully engaged in the war against the Shia, being carried out by Saudi lap-dogs. Thats what the so-called Arab spring is really about. A global war between the Sunni and Shia, and were caught right in the middle of it, by design.
