New Zealand: New Evidence for Regular Magnitude 8 Earthquakes

A new study published in the journal Science, co-authored by University of Nevada, Reno's Glenn Biasi and colleagues at GNS Science in New Zealand, finds that very large earthquakes have been occurring relatively regularly on the Alpine Fault along the southwest coastline of New Zealand for at least 8,000 years.

This is a pretty big revelation. You should make a thread for it.

Been reading about that.
There are no volcanoes in the south Island and the alpine fault is close to where I live so we have been learning more about it all my lifetime.

While that study is accurate there is a piece of missing information only discovered 6 months ago.

We have been overdue for the usual 7 that fault produces for 30-50 years now and it was a puzzle. they found instead of building pressure and having a big one the alpine fault has been have long slow earthquakes [lasting up to 30 minuets] that have been stopping a big one from nailing us.

When I was at school one of my friend did the alpine study. You could see the two halves of the fault and how one side had gone north while the other went south.

The aerial photograph showed where mountain peaks had been split and were currently kilometers [read miles] apart and you could in your imagination slide them back in line.

The North Island has Volcanoes.
Lake Rotorua [active and hot at points] was not a lake until it blew a few thousand years ago. Bigger than Krakatoa they say.

Auckland is built on 4 dormant volcanoes.

A part of you already knows the answers.
The more you can control yourself the less control your environment has over you.

RE: THE Earthquake Thread
The Live Internet Seismic Servers are all showing some major shaking today. Resonance and vibration from the Philippine quake would be one explanation.

Usually they look more like this:

"The unexamined life is not worth living."--Socrates"
There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true."
— Søren Kierkegaard
Most arguments rely on appeals to authority or morality. Truth and reason necessarily rely on neither.
