Teenager dies during pro-democracy protests in Bahrain

Dozens of other people reportedly injured in the violence, some by teargas and others more seriously.

Bahraini security forces have fired teargas, rubber bullets and birdshot at demonstrators hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails in street battles that left one teenager dead and dozens more people injured on the second anniversary of the country's failed pro-democracy uprising.

The main opposition group, al-Wefaq, said 16-year-old Ali Ahmed Ibrahim Aljazeeri died from his injuries about an hour after being shot early in the morning in the village of Diya, near the capital Manama. "He was shot with three rounds from a birdshot gun and died of critical injuries to the upper body and lungs," the group said. "Witnesses confirm he was posing no threat to any police officers at the time."

Dozens of other people were also hurt in the violence, al-Wefaq said, some by teargas and others more seriously.

Saudi Arabia beheads Pakistani for drug trafficking

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday beheaded by the sword a Pakistani man convicted of drug trafficking, the interior ministry said.

Aqeel Khan Mohammed Riyad was convicted of attempting to smuggle heroin into the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom, the ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency SPA.

His execution brings to 15 the number of people beheaded in Saudi Arabia so far this year.

In 2012, the kingdom executed 76 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. The US-based Human Rights Watch put the number at 69.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of sharia, or Islamic law.

Outrage over beheading of Sri Lankan woman by Saudi Arabia

A young Sri Lankan woman has been beheaded with a sword in a small, dusty town in Saudi Arabia.

Rizana Nafeek arrived in Saudi Arabia in 2005 and spent her first few weeks in Saudi Arabia working as a housemaid to earn money to support her relatives back home who had been displaced by the massive tsunami in the Indian Ocean the year before.

She then spent the next seven years in Saudi jails as she was accused, charged, convicted and sentenced to death in the killing of her employers' 4-month-old son. Authorities executed her Wednesday in Dawadmi, about 200 kilometers west of the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The family said she had strangled the boy, Kayed bin Nayef bin Jazyan al-Otaibi, after being asked to bottle-feed him. Nafeek said the infant accidentally choked on milk.

Yemen failed to probe killing of protesters

An international human rights group has accused Yemen of failing to investigate the 2011 killing of 45 anti-government protesters during the uprising against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Human Rights Watch says in a report released Tuesday that top former officials _ including Saleh's relatives, such as his nephew _ should be held responsible for the slayings.

The New York-based group was referring to the March 18, 2011 incident, when the government unleashed security forces on the demonstrators in the capital, Sanaa.

Protester dies week after head injury during clashes

An opposition official in Bahrain says a 20-year-old protester died from injuries suffered during clashes with security forces.

The death is the second this month blamed on riot police.

Hadi al-Musawi, a spokesman for the Shiite group Al Wefaq, said the protester died early Friday from a head injury sustained Feb. 14 when he was hit with a tear gas canister fired by security forces. Bahraini officials had no immediate comment.

Thanks for including the human rights abuses that go on in the other countries in that area as well. The entire region is a mess and has been for a long time.

A lot of those places have a disproportionately large number of young people compared to the West or China so this is bound to continue for a long time...

Isn't the U.S. cozy with the Bahrain dictatorship? Maybe that is why these fascist crimes are almost never reported in American msm.

I dont think there is a decent Government in the entire region. Even worse, there is no way to replace them.

Qatari poet life sentence reduced to 15 years

A Qatari poet sentenced to life in prison for inciting the overthrow of the government and insulting Qatar's rulers has had his jail term cut.

Mohammed al-Ajami's sentence was reduced to 15 years, his lawyer said.

Human rights groups have condemned Mr Ajami's conviction, saying his trial was marred by irregularities, with court sessions held in secret.

The case against Mr Ajami is said to be based on a poem he wrote in 2010 which criticised the Emir, Sheikh Hamad al-Thani.

But activists believe the authorities were angered by a 2011 poem he wrote about authoritarian rule in the region.

Saudi Arabia arrests 176 at protest to support prisoners

Saudi police arrested 176 people in the Gulf Arab kingdom’s central Qassim province Friday after a protest calling for fair treatment for security prisoners.

State news agency SPA said that those detained, who included 15 women, had refused to disperse from a sit-in staged outside the investigation and prosecution bureau in the town of Buraida.

SPA news agency quoted a police spokesman in the Qassim region as saying that those detained Friday “refused to respond to instructions and attempts by security personnel for more than 12 hours to get them to end their informal gathering.”

All protests in Saudi Arabia are illegal. The government says it does not mistreat prisoners.

Saudi seven face crucifixion and firing squad for armed robbery

One of group to be executed, speaking from cell on smuggled phone, says most of ring were juveniles at time of thefts.

One of seven Saudis due to be put to death on Tuesday by crucifixion and firing squad for armed robbery, speaking over a smuggled mobile phone from his prison cell, has appealed for help to stop the executions.

Nasser al-Qahtani told Associated Press from Abha general prison on Monday that he was arrested as part of 23-member ring that stole from jewellery stores in 2004 and 2005. He said they had been tortured to confess and had no access to lawyers.

"I killed no one. I didn't have weapons while robbing the store, but the police tortured me, beat me up and threatened to assault my mother to extract confessions that I had a weapon with me while I was only 15," he said. "We don't deserve death."

A leading human rights group added its appeal to Saudi authorities to stop the executions.

Qahtani, 24, said he and most of the ring were juveniles at the time of the thefts. They were arrested in 2006. The seven received death sentences in 2009, the Saudi newspaper Okaz reported.

Last Saturday, Qahtani said, Saudi King Abdullah ratified the death sentences and sent them to Abha. Authorities set Tuesday for the executions. They also determined the methods.

The main defendant, Sarhan al-Mashayeh, will be crucified for three days. The others will face firing squads.

Bahrain arrests six for defaming ruler on Twitter

The public prosecutor's office in Bahrain says six people have been detained for allegedly defaming the country's ruler on Twitter, according to The Associated Press.

The six, who were not identified, join a growing list of anti-government activists caught up in an Internet crackdown by authorities in the Sunni-ruled Gulf nation.

The six were detained over the past couple of days and the prosecutor's statement Wednesday said they will be charged with misusing Twitter and insulting King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
