The .22 thread
This seems like a good thread to start on the night shift.

I come from Western Washington, very liberal area, but also rural to a large degree. I didn't grow up around guns, and dont know a lot about them. I live in Texas now, shit is getting crazy and I live a few blocks from the ghetto, so self defense is getting higher on the priority list. Like most people, I don't have a lot of money, so my research has led me to conclude that .22s are the best bet for value and versatility. Rifles could be used to hunt small to medium game, and with ammo at a nickel apiece and 10 round capacity for a pistol, who cares about stopping power? Just unload, i can't believe that the shock of getting shot 10 times with a smaller caliber would be less effective than 3 of a higher, and plus you increase the odds of a lethal shot every time. For "civil" defense, the more the better, right? 2,000 rounds for less than a hundred dollars is very attractive.

Looks like there's plenty of good options for rifles, but for a pistol, I like the Ruger MK II.

Any thoughts? Disagreements? I welcome any and all ideas.

Interesting, but in terms of home defense, you're never going to be more than 10 or fifteen feet from an invader (at least in my house). Wouldnt the body go into shock after a certain number of hits, even from a 22?

I've been to a couple of shooting scenes, and It's surprising how much it can take to kill someone, but how little it can take (sometimes) to stop them.

Ruger Mk II/III and Ruger 1022 are the most underrated firearms on the market. You would be better off with a 22lr and 10 hicap mags for each than buying something you could barely afford to shoot.

Man, I reckon unless you got lucky, all those stinging little slaps would just piss you off and make you run AT the guy in close quarters.
For a handgun, to kill people? I reckon you'd want something bigger than that.
Not that I know shit all about it really chuckle

With good ammo and magazines the Ruger Mk II/III is the most reliable and durable semi-auto 22lr pistol ever made.

I own several and none of them are "trouble free" except my Rugers.

A rather gruesome bit of trivia: The most recent psychotic school shooting rampage was carried out with a Ruger target pistol and it proved to be quite lethal in the hands of a sick kid who spent long afternoons behind the barn dreaming about shooting the bullies at his school while plinking at empty cans of Mountain Dew.
