The Dead are not Sleeping
I was 16 and my sister's father-in-law had passed away, so my family went to his funeral, which was open casket.
It was such a revelation to see, what I called at the time.... 'a real live dead person'.
I had known this tall, gregarious extroverted larger-than-life man for several years, so it took my breath away to see his seemingly shrunken, lifeless body that appeared akin to seeing an air mattress that had deflated after springing a leak.
He looked pleasant enough, peaceful, but even with his eyes closed as if he were sleeping...it was physically obvious that he was not.
That whatever had filled and animated his flesh and bone body....was gone, to the point where the visage of the person laying in the casket was completely void of the esse of it's former personality...leaving an empty vessel behind.
it wasn't scary or disturbing...it was an 'aha!' spiritual moment....that was the best illustration of how the soul animates the vessel.... but after the bodily functions cease....the soul leaves....and moves on.

I was like what if I stayed up 4 months and didnt bother no one, then its not a problem

RE: The Dead are not Sleeping
Death is as natural as birth, yet there is a tendency to view death as if it's a scary monster or curse, or an unfortunate unexpected cessation of life! It's not!
The minute our souls are born in a fleshly body which is a wonderful celebration of new life in the world..... we are immediately guaranteed that our mortal bodies will at some point will throw off this mortal coil...and cease functioning, for what is a variety of creative reasons.
yet...
"Where is your sting, oh death?
Where is your victory, oh, Sheol?"

i take this to mean that Jesus will return and it will not be necessary to be dead to be changed. and the dead will be awakened.
What can be more foolish than to think that all this rare fabric of heaven and earth could come by chance, when all the skill of art is not able to make an oyster!

Oh and I thought they all became zombies...my mistake.
Who ever thought they were sleeping? I think that's the anture of a corpse.
They're just not chatty. No one would ever think the soul lives within the dead bits...that would be a silly idea.

"They're just not chatty"...
the point was, that although the dead have assumed the common sleeping position...(laying horizontal, eyes closed ), it's still apparent that they're not sleeping. You can tell there is something missing.

Ecclesiastes .9
[1] But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hate man does not know. Everything before them is vanity,
[2] since one fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As is the good man, so is the sinner; and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.
[3] This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that one fate comes to all; also the hearts of men are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
[4] But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
[5] For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward; but the memory of them is lost.
[6] Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and they have no more for ever any share in all that is done under the sun.
You bore me with your constant whining. Sea has had enough!
So please go away, and I'll give you some of this useless yellow stuff!

Yes...and guessing that's because they're dead? ( it goes with the territory)..what's missing ( I feel I am well informed here) is their bodily felshy life rendering them stiffer than they ever really wanted to be.
Yes you're so right, they're not sleeping, who'd have thought.
No wonder those hot water bottles weren't having the desired effect on my grandmother..
