The Fallacy of Bugging Out – Are You Prepared to Be a Refugee?
http://www.shtfplan.com/emergency-prepar...e_04192012

Many websites, blogs and forums have covered the topic of bugging out in excruciating detail, all under the assumption that this will be a necessary escape plan for many of us when the proverbial shit hits the fan. This notion is predicated upon the belief that escape and evasion, necessary for your immediate survival will be a (likely) event that you must plan and prepare for now.

However, nothing could be further from the real and actual truth. This cherished myth is a deceptive and dangerous notion that has little place in reality. I’ve long held a stanceagainst this notion because in nearly all cases and all situations, this is a very bad idea with oftentimes fatal consequences. Bugging out is embracing the refugee lifestyle – a very bad idea. Refugees throughout history have fared very badly, suffered extreme hardship and deprivation, with many not surviving the experience. There is a far better alternative to this.

Exposure=Risk

Humans are dangerous and the more densely packed they are the more likely they are to give you plague, rob, kill or even EAT YOU.

If you live in a town with a modest population that is far away enough from large urban centers then there is no need to "Bug Out" but if you live somewhere chock full of people without a clue about sustaining themselves and who made no preps then you'd be better off with a few preps living in a hastily dug ditch 80 miles from town.

Refugees are survivors and being descended from people who "bugged out" and made their way to America I can tell you that most of my family that didn't were wiped out in WW2.

RE: The Fallacy of Bugging Out – Are You Prepared to Be a Refugee?
That article assumes a lot. Like "losing my job" is a downside to getting out of dodge? Ruining my credit rating? Really? chuckle IF I ever have to leave it will be at the point there IS no job, let alone functioning cities to "buy stuff". The author states he got rid of his bug-out bag too. Big mistake. A BOB is a very low cost/maintenance piece of equipment to have, depending on the scenario of course.

Seems like a disinfo article aimed at keeping the cattle herded. Don't bother running. No sense is trying. Just stay in the city, everything will be fiiiiiiine. doomed

No its seems like an article that uses some f*cking common sense for once instead of just knee jerking and herp derping.

Common sense based on what? The author's opinion of what will happen in a collapse scenario? I prefer to keep my options open, and the equipment needed to do so at hand. I'll keep my bug out bag just in case, thanks.

RE: The Fallacy of Bugging Out – Are You Prepared to Be a Refugee?
Many people bug out with the intention of reaching a pre-established location which is safer than the alternative (staying at their home which is probably in a big city if they're buggin out). Usually this is a family or friends house or perhaps some vacation land they use seasonally. I would agree bugging out to live off the land isn't wise. I have a bug out kit and plans with several routes to take as well as hidden caches of supplies along the way, but I'm not aimlessly bugging out if I ever had to. We have land with a few hundred acres and a couple cabins and several outbuildings which will be my intended destination.

RE: The Fallacy of Bugging Out – Are You Prepared to Be a Refugee?
I'd say you're right -- most of the time. Certainly, if you have no place definite to go (other than something vague like "up to the woods") without a skill set or infrastructure or any more supplies than a gun and a week's supply of MRE's, then yes, you'd probably be safer at home -- in a defensive situation with somewhat of a food and water supply (even if only temporary) and the ability to lock your door if nothing else.

On the other hand, if you have someplace that you know will be safer (e.g., your summer cottage in the mountains, your uncle's farm) and you're rasonably sure you can get there safely; or, if you're in a situation that is definitely dangerous (e.g., an inncer city location with lots of existing crime and no food/water infrastructure at all); then you might have to make what the government in Vietnam called an "agonizing re-appraisal" and hope that you might actually survive what will most likely be a short and unpleasant life as a refugee.

I've always believed, if you really think bugging out is a possibility, that you shouldn't waste your time and money buying all sort of gear to get to a safe retreat that probably doesn't exist; buy and stock the safe retreat first, then plan on how to get there.

It all depends on the scenario, some shtf scenarios(super volcano, asteroid or nuclear war)your best bet would be to stay in place with all your supplies until the dust settles.Other scenarios(financial collapse, race war)your best bet would be to get the f*ck away from people,no matter what the scenario is after a few weeks people are going to be hungry every where(city folk, country folk)every one will be on the menu.Think of the movie The Road, that's what the future of humanity looks like. Cool! That is my idea as well. I will not turn away families I don't give a shit what other people say! Everybody works, everybody has a job no matter how small it may be. Work or leave and starve!

Bugging out is my very last option.

I do bug out for hurricanes and am quite prepared for temporary bug-outs.

But as far as in a SHTF situation. Staying put is always my safest option.

You hav'nt seen the worst of humanity yet,I have .I'm not saying it is going to play out exactly like that movie but the way people treat other people after the shtf is spot on,inhumanity to man will be INSTINCT.

Amanda Dunfrey: I can't accept that. People are basically good; decent. My god, David, we're a civilized society.
David Drayton: Sure, as long as the machines are working and you can dial 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, you scare the shit out of them - no more rules.
