Indi, can you explain (or send me a link that explains) the spiral nature in your image above?

At first glance I can't understand how a comet (or asteroid stream left by a comet) can have such an approach.
What centre of gravity is being 'orbited' before it makes a 'b-line' for our Sun?
I'm guessing the overall distance is massive so should look more like a 'cork-screw' but I'm still confused (it is late though)!

TIA - and yet another good thread - I'm enjoying reading your stuff on this (even if I don't always comment).

Cheers

You know your the first person to actually ask me to explain the image so thank you, sometimes I feel like I'm talking to a class room of ADD kids.

An object like ISON coming in from a long way off over many years appears to oscillate in an elliptic spiral due to the observer being on a planet that moves in an elipitic orbit.

So I took the image from the finder chart for ISON at the Aerith Site (hyperlinked) and added a graphic extrapolating the spiral as it grew from a point source in the background stars to the loops it was appearing to make.

I added rays from another image detailing the Geminids focus point.

It's a bit rough and I'm sure a professional with the math skills to plot ISONs position back over time would get a more accurate image.

Ah OK, thanks.
So it appears to 'spiral' against the background stars due to Earth 'bobbing' up and down on the ecliptic. Like a middle distant object appearing to rise or fall from the horizon if you are sat on a boat.

I'm sure I'm not the only visitor to your threads, who is like the quiet kids at the back, hanging on every word but not willing to raise their hands. chuckle

I'm not one to post much anyway but I can't be bothered to get involved with people who don't look just object. Or those like SingI'llSway who seemed to have daersoulkeeper confused with a second sun proponent and wanted to bait him/her about claims that had not been made made - In this great thread HERE which had fools jumping all over it who clearly had not read or assumed claims that were not made.

Unfortunately many get one wiff of a subject from one source then have made their minds up (forever) whether they believe it or not. The thread above it was clear who had background reading of the topic and who had only read a blogg 'debunking' it.

When it comes to ISON or comets or any talk of a Nibiru type objects some people read no further than the title as they have already decided they are 'debunkers' of such 'nonsense' and miss the fact that not all of those threads ARE nonsense.
They will even skip over supporting claims by NASA etc that there is/maybe another solar-system, orbiting a dark-star twin (they called it Nemesis) of out sun, that is approaching the Oort cloud and maybe what is 'throwing' comets at us.

If there is an increase (which there is) of comets coming from the same area of space it should be considered that that area is where the 'Nemesis' system is. They will often say how it is BS just on the premise that amateur astronomers (of which I am one) haven't seen it.
They seem to misunderstand the complexity and difficulty of finding such deep-space bodies. Even if you know the co-ordinates of a body (i.e. it must have already been identified) it can be very hard unless you have a very expensive scope - anything less than 12" (mine is only 9") would not resolve (at least not well) a Magnitude 12 object - the best I'd hope for, really, would be Mag 9. And that is if you know WHAT you are looking for - the amount of times I've seen amazing stuff but had NO idea what it was...
If you don't have an expensive (anchored and calibrated, even goto) scope you have little chance of finding a new comet - the shear number of amateur astronomers is the only reason it happens at all. The knowledge and math skills required to identify (which includes tracking for a couple of sessions or more) something as 'new' is also vastly larger than many here seem to realise - just having a scope (even a very expensive one) does not mean you are even close to experienced enough to find a new object and have it confirmed and classified. Usually those who ask for confirmation are ignored unless they are part of an astronomy club or university etc. - hell, I wouldn't even know who to phone!

And as for spotting a brown-dwarf with an Earth based optical scope - that's just daft. I don't know any amateurs who have IR scopes. Spotting an object that is close to the Sun is also next to impossible for amateurs as any filter used to allow imaging the Sun darkens everything else as well - the Sun would still 'flood out' the FOV. I'm not familiar with the Sun specific scopes so I'll not count them out - however, they are designed to inspect the Sun and not object that are beside it.

Thanks for that link - I'll check it out after some coffee!

Dear God/Aliens/Council incharge of shit,
Please pelt me and my home with big rocks. Little rocks. Lots of rocks, fire from the sky, flooding, gamma rays what have you. I stood on porch in the rain holding a metal golf club with a magnet taped to it and was not struck by lightning. I will try again next time.

Thank you for this thread, it is the only hope I have.

Cheers
