My wife was 15 minutes from being there. She started up to the mall and a taxi driver pulled over to tell her about what happened. By the time she got there people were crying and hugging each other. My wife ran into a friend (that looked to be in shock) that
she use to work with and the lady told her that she had just gone on a lunch break and another lady had just come there to relieve her and that lady is now missing.

Vehicles park on the roof of the mall and apparently a pickup and a car went through. The mall has apparently now been condemned and many people are now without work. The lawsuits will probably run into the millions.

When you live in a small town, these things hit home a lot harder because you know the people personally.

Please keep Elliot Lake in your prayers.

At least one person has died. Scores of others are missing and presumed dead or trapped. They actually stopped the rescue effort at one point because they said it was too "unsafe to continue". The "rescue" is back on now but it's perhaps too Little, too late.

Our town may never recover from this.

Normally when you go to a mall you park in a parking lot on the ground. Not on the roof, wtf.

RE: The Mall roof collapsed in my town today
They apparently cleared out an unstable escalator bank overnight and are getting set to get in there with the dogs after more debris and slabs are stabilized or removed. The building is still very very dangerous, and the wrong move could endanger trapped survivors even further.

No signs of life since Monday, and we're coming up on 96 hours. They already know one person is dead.

Not looking good. There's at least 2 people trapped in there, and maybe up to 10.

The last time I visited Elliott Lake was a few years ago. Beautiful place, a photographers dream. Fire-tower lookout is awesome in the Fall months when the colours are changing. At the time I was even considering purchasing a free-hold townhouse just down the street from this mall (real-estate is a well-priced).

I always thought it was strange that they had parking on the mall roof. I hear it had been leaking like a f*cking sieve for years. Looks like the steel structure took on some undetected corrosion as a result and caused a pretty heavy beam to let go from one end (you can see it in the few interior pictures of the collapse).

I don't think the building was designed for roof-top parking, it was something they did later.

I hope everyone is paying attention: Buildings can be very dangerous. There was a collapse of a very large high-end department store in Korea several years ago that is very interesting to read about.

The Lucky AC  Wrote:
The Company who Engineered and or built that parking garage on top is liable. That sounds like design flaw.

From the MSNBC article:
Quote:But the CBC said the Elliot Lake Standard newspaper has reported that the mall had had roof leaks for years.

Not so fast.

Any liability imposed on the designers / builders (to the extent any is found) will be mitigated by lack of proper maintenance on the part of the property owner.

There may even be an issue with commercial property insurance coverage. Collapse (as a cause of a loss) is primarily covered only when it is sudden and accidental. If there were signs and reports of a pending collapse of the roof "for years", an issue of coverage may be reasonably made.

It's unbelievable that construction quality is so poor at this point in history. You would expect people to be smarter. Maybe it was greed that drove the choices to save money here and there and build a piece of crap that would later turn into a tomb. Heads should be on the chopping block for allowing this to happen. Create new jobs by prosecuting and dismissing the people who created this nightmare.

Canadians aren't allowed to sue, are they? No trials, right?

That sounds like a incredibly stupid idea. Especially anywhere that gets either snow or a lot of rain.

I'm watching it live on CBC. One body has just been removed.

Apparently, the roof was never meant to have cars parking on it. That came about years later when there was complaints of lack of parking. (I know, right?)
