The coke in coca-cola
I was reading an article on the history of Coca Cola. It is a real drama in the early years and will probably be made into a movie someday when the dirty story becomes more available.

Over 1,095,000,000 cans/bottles of Coke are sold worldwide daily.

Coca Cola flavoring syrup still uses coca leaf extract albeit a "decocainized" version prepared at a Stepan Company plant in Maywood, NJ. This factory accepts large shipments of legally grown and imported coca leaf and processes it to produce the flavoring used in all that soda. The original recipe of inventor John Pemberton calls for 9mg of cocaine per dose of 8oz back in the 1880's.

At todays sales numbers of 12oz units, that would be around 182,500 kilograms of cocaine HCL separated annually at that one plant in New Jersey. This is highly conservative because I am not factoring in fountain drinks, just bottled & canned.

My question is: What the hell happens to the ENORMOUS amount of cocaine separated from the extract?

There are many current medical uses for cocaine.
Cocaine is used for topical anesthesia and vasoconstriction for surgery of the nose, throat, and oral cavity. Cocaine provides rapid and profound anesthesia in conjunction with vasoconstriction and decongestion of swollen mucosa.

It's sold to big pharma. Johnson & Johnson and Merck have a HUGE presence in north Jersey along with a whole host of others:

RE: The coke in coca-cola
Probably a lot is sold to big pharma and used to produce novacaine and/or pharmaceutical cocaine, though that is very rarely used today I believe.
