We were hit in 1908 by something that would have destroyed an entire city in a second if it had impacted somewhere besides Siberia and we were almost hit again by an extinction level event in 1936 when a gigantic 1 - 2 mile wide space rock passed only a million miles from us. (See Link)

Yep, the risks are there, but there is no "barrage" of asteroids headed for
us at this moment. BTW, are you familiar with Brazil's Tunguska-like event?

"Since SOHO was launched there has been a trend of increasing numbers of Kreutz sungrazers," he pointed out. A table in Knight's 2008 PhD thesis shows SOHO detecting 69 sungrazers in 1997 compared to 200 sungrazers in 2010. "The increase is significant and cannot be accounted for by improvements in SOHO or the increasing skill of comet hunters."

When did the Earth become the Sun and asteroids become comets?

What in the hell do you think you've "gotten" me with?

Not only is the galactic plane imprecise due to our galaxy not being
perfectly coplanar but we don't pass through it but once ever 33
million years, with our last passage being 3 million years ago:

Also, we cross the galactic equator twice a year:

The moon is battered with craters because it's older than our planet and at one point, a mini earth with vegetation, crystal cities and water.

RE: Thousands of Asteroids Close to Earth
The moon is a constant reminder that any planet like earth can become a barren dead wasteland of a planet. Just look at Mars.

Be thankful you have a working living earth and oxygen right now.

RE: Thousands of Asteroids Close to Earth
hundreds of asteroids fall to earth every single day

granted, they are usually small, and even if they are egg-sized and can wop yer head pretty bad, most of them fall into the ocean

another plus for living on a planet that is mostly water

let's hear it for water Rofl

70 percent chance of impact doom remaining:

"The survey found there are likely 4,700 potentially hazardous asteroids, plus or minus 1,500 space rocks, that are larger than 330 feet (100 meters) wide and in orbits that occasionally bring them close enough to Earth to pose a concern, researchers said. To date, only about 30 percent of those objects have actually been found, they added." http://www.space.com/15734-dangerous-ast...scope.html

And here's a good site for reviewing things that did hit the earth: http://craterhunter.wordpress.com/

Then why do Moon rocks show none of the normal composition you would
find in Earth rocks?

To me this is one of those dooms that is useless to worry about. What good could come from carrying a load of asteroid anxiety around? Besides, I've already got my umbrella.

What in the hell do you think you've "gotten" me with?

Earth and the sun are kind of in the same neighborhood....

....and a 500 meter comet and a 500 meter asteroid are both going to be a very bad day for us if they are heading in our direction....

My point was that the skies are getting busier and I believe we are passing through a region of space concentrated with more of these fellows...
