i just hope they weaponize space for our safety

and quick
Blowing up asteroids only creates MORE impact locations which can make
things even worse. Weapons aren't needed to deal with them. Just a
simple probe that can push the thing a few inches in a different direction
will make it miss the Earth. At least if we get to it a few months before.
A week or so before weapons might be needed, but then only to cause an
explosion near the asteroid, not on or in it. That can deflect it away too.

Earth and the sun are kind of in the same neighborhood....
....and a 500 meter comet and a 500 meter asteroid are both going to be a very bad day for us if they are heading in our direction....
My point was that the skies are getting busier and I believe we are passing through a region of space concentrated with more of these fellows...
But read the link I provided. The skies are NOT getting busier. These same
asteroids didn't just show up. We have better tracking capabilities now and
they actually only performed a survey on a fraction of what they think is out
there (again, that was provided in the article).

Oh, and being in the "same neighborhood" as the Sun (93 million miles away)
means that the Sun will win the gravity battle with Earth almost all the time. Still no "gotcha".

how big would 2012da14 be once it enters our atmosphere and finally reached the ground?
If it were to strike the Earth, it is estimated that it would produce the
equivalent of 2.4 megatons of TNT. The Tunguska event has been estimated
at 3−20 megatons. But it rates a 0 (No Threat) on the Torino scale.

How is that even a reply? It takes the Earth 30 million years to pass through
the galactic plane and we passed through the last time 3 million years ago.
Also, the notion of a "galactic plane" is really undefinable due to our galaxy
not being coplanar.

You guys do understand what the word "potential" means, right? This
is part of a survey they conducted. The asteroids have ALWAYS been out
there. This isn't some new "barrage" like that alarmist video claims. At
least they mentioned the 5 million mile distance. That's still pretty far out
away from the Earth. What they are saying is that these asteroids have the
ability to cause problems. None of them will in the next few years, but 100,
or 1000 years out is a different story.
http://www.space.com/15734-dangerous-ast...scope.html

They are trying to draw attention to the need to keep track of these things
because it's not a question of if, it's a question of when. The Earth gets
hit by damaging rocks. It's just a fact of life on this planet and any work
on being able to identify these threats and propose mitigation plans is a
Very Good Thing.
