When SHTF i believe the safest place to be is on the water (aren't international waters ungoverned?)...sailing the world. (you can go to what ever safe port exists....south america if you wish, sailing is also a lot cheaper and eco friendly than any other means of transport)

RE: Time to smell the coffee - things are going to get much worse, we need to act NOW
Two off the wall questions that are bugging me.
Why does a nuclear power plant require electricity from off site to run it's cooling system, and why are they threatened with overheating and meltdown any time outside power is cut off? Aren't they supposed to be generating power? Surely if they are generating power they wouldn't need an outside source of power to operate.
I read recently that 54 out of 55 Japanese nuke power plants are now shut down. If all of these plants being shut down has not caused a nationwide power crisis, why not? If they are not needed to generate power, why are they there?
I would advise anyone reading this not to think too deeply about those questions because the only logical answers will not make you happy.

I like Uruguay.
My family ignore(s)(d) the warnings.
Also, I notice many without an innate, precognitive, inner voice, or the like leading them independently to desire discussing such topics only formulate (in a sense) self-serving thoughts.
As soon as I saw the Japan quake alert, I called my dad to tell him. He, at work, had been alerted to the earthquake. I kept telling him calmly, "no, it's bad; It's really bad," as I searched for more incoming data. I told him there would be a tsunami and that caught him off guard, so I reminded him of the Sumatra Tsunami and asked, "what triggered the Tsunami?" We both answered in unison, "an earthquake."
Well, its bad. I remember the first rain we had after the 3/11/11 quake. I did not want to go out in the rain and explained why long before we had any. When it finally rained I kept asking my dad now. "what do you think? Should we be in the rain or should we be avoiding it?"

I felt the exact same way - when the buildings blew up and a couple days later it rained, I could feel the radiation in it -
Now I dislike rain.

Vegas Wrote:I really admire your courage Astrochick but I think it might be wiser in the long run to act on your own and look for a safer spot to live in the U.S. that has the amenities you would need to survive in a SHTF scenario... Water, Food, Wood...
Good advice, Vegas. Astro, don't you have family in the states to hunker down with? Leaving the coast is probably a good idea and the notion of living in a tropical paradise does seem romantic but every place has it's drawbacks.
Have you ever lived outside the US? It's different and mostly because you're different from them. I'm guessing the expats are retirees and that means they are old and you're not! I can understand your desire to protect your daughter but currently are you all she has in this world? There is safety in numbers even if it's newly acquired friends and/or doomers/preppers.
Radiation is only ONE piece of the puzzle and if we really are in end times there is a whole shitstorm on the horizon from which there is little escape and that depends on your belief system. You could escape an ice age only to have every green living thing stripped bare by insects or fireballs.
There's still cheap land in some places of the US and you could build a sweet hidey hole for alot less than moving to SA. Think concrete and earthbags that would able to withstand 200+ mile an hour solar winds.
Best of luck to you and your daughter.

RE: Time to smell the coffee - things are going to get much worse, we need to act NOW
Here's my original post on the subject at another forum.
Quote:Ok, Astrochick's post had me thinking since she first dropped this idea onto the forum. And I seriously thought about how to get the funding to buy into this plan and get as much of my family (those that I can stand anyways) into it and out of the northern hemisphere.
Then I started looking into the various countries in the southern hemisphere, what sorts of governments they had, how to get citizenship and what sort of alliances and religious freedom and etc. Once I really got started on the research even at the most superficial level and without delving into things like crime statistics and other deeper subject to tell you the health of the country I realized that I did not want to be a part of any of them except as maybe a trading partner. As a place to visit most of these countries seem very nice but as a place to live, not quite so much.
Quite the quandary and it had me slightly depressed until a series of events happened last night that perked me right back up.
I was flipping through netflix looking for something to watch while I was logged into LOP and reviewing an old thread that I was thinking about bringing over here and the synchronicity of it slapped me right in the back of the head.
Water world without the drama and Kevin Costner.
Now before y'all get to laughing your asses off hear me out.
I was reviewing the old aquaponic's thread at the same time that I had a wind power video going when I stumbled upon the movie Water world on netflix. The solution just sort of clicked. We create a fleet of 'recommissioned' ships that are re-purposed as mini villages. With greenhouse and aquaponics technology where it is, solar and wind power charging battery banks and other assorted tech available to us we can convert old freight ships or tankers into little floating villages loosely allied for trade and common defense with each village being an independent 'state' with it's own constitution and government under the umbrella of the 'alliance'.
Why bother dealing with a government that is not of your own making and could possibly turn hostile at 'outsiders' when they start arriving in numbers? We could do with the 'alliance' what the founders of the US were attempting here but in a more Libertarian fashion. Or we could go off in a variety of directions with our government structure but I'm preferential towards the Libertarian ideal of a Representative Republic.
I'm contemplating pulling up some schematics and statistics on ships like old tankers and freight haulers to see what sort of cargo and deck space there is and make some rough plans on space allotment for greenhouses and grow houses.
While smaller sail boats are interesting I'm thinking more along the lines of larger commercial haulers and the like. There are plenty of examples of container housing out there where each family/person could have their own bedroom/living space by using containers lined up on the deck with another deck built on top for the grow/green aquaponics and etc. This creates a covered living area with the below decks area being manufacturing and community space.
I'm crunching some numbers and doing research into electrical consumption and generation capacity on a variety of different models and types. It's slow going though. I'm a generalist not a specialist. This means that I know enough to be annoying but not enough to make the research go smoothly.
So far I have a few wind turrets mounted fore and aft, solar collectors and panels along with underwater turbines each linked to it's own generator to feed the battery banks. I'm also looking into the gearing ratios for transmissions for electric engines to provide motive power to the ship and/or electrical generation when not moving.
Each ship could have some sort of manufacturing base (either specialized or general) to provide trade goods alongside the food surpluses to trade for raw materials that can't be had on shipboard. Metal stocks and the like for fabrication into parts for the ship or trade goods for example.

you could be right.

one thing that bothers me about sailing, is being in rough seas in a relatively small boat...but....check this out...
sipping martinis and making supper in extreme comfort while the cat surfs through 40 knot winds and 30-40 waves...now this i could deal with....

The E.T's that are watching and monitoring our planet won't allow a massive extinction of the human race. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
