Well lopers the Booner with a question here. The little woman blew up the 12v plug on her Tom Tom nav system yesterday and I replaced the plug that evening. Thanks Radioshack as per normal with me. We have history but regardless I've got power to the unit thru the new plug and replacing a fuse in the car. Got a amber indicator showing power at the unit but can't seem to raise a screen. Is there another fuse in the unit or should I just trash it and get another one as whatever happen it blew a 20amp fuse in the dash.S977

It's probable the power supply inside the GPS was also blown. The only fuse (if any) would be on the circuit board itself. Sorry, but it sounds like replacement is your best bet. How did that happen?

I have a theory about it and it goes into how most all problems in the world have a female at the root. This has never made me very popular but as a former pimp you can trust me on this one. chuckle

Booner it sounds like a shorted filter capacitor or shorted reverse power protection diode in the power input area of the Tom Tom's circuit board, that is the only failure mode that could draw in excess of twenty amps, downstream components could typically not draw that much power.

Easy fix if you are handy with an ohm meter and soldering iron.

Parts would be about $5

Court dude how do you take the back off this thing? Got three little metal clips around this lens cap looking back that must be holding the
case together. Thinking if I compress these and turn the round lens cap looking piece I'll be into the guts of it. Thanks for the input regardless.

That is going to be more than most people would be able to do, which is why I didn't bother going there. Plus, the company would charge an arm and a leg. Unless he has a twidget friend...

RE: Tom Tom help would be awesome
i've never openned a tom tom, though internally they are no different than any other device with a gas-bonded, surface mount component, printed circuit board (pcb) which i have a great deal of experience with.

think of it this way: it's already broken

after your efforts it will either still be broken--so no loss, its bad right now

or it will work and you will have saved a bundle

the capacitor will be near the usb plug and easily unsolderd from the board surface

rather than a diode for reverse voltage protection (you can't plug it in wrong) it may instead have a MOV--Metal Oxide Varistor similarly located as the capacitor.

the MOV serves to protect electronics from voltage spikes--it is high resistance when quiescent or 'standing by' it sits between the power and neutral (+12 and ground)

but if the MOV 'sees' a voltage surge as could happen during vehicle starting it becomes a short circuit for a few millionths of a second to shunt the voltage spike to ground, then it resets

eventually they fail and remain in a fired state--a short circuit!

Good luck!!!

if not, then a fix would not be possible Heartflowers

Yeah, you'd have to go in like a surgeon op. chuckle If you're going to chuck it, you might as well open it up and try just for the fun of it. I've had my Tom Tom for a year and a half now. Use it for deliveries almost daily and it's still working like day one. Very happy with it. Too bad your Lady had that surge go through it. I have noticed the prices on all Gps's have been coming down a lot in the last year, like most electronic goods. Maybe you can find a good deal somewhere
