Can Turkey force U.S. and other NATO countries to attack Syria?

By Adam Levine, CNN

With the consultations, there is a chance Turkey will demand a collective military response. The notion comes from what is known as Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Washington Treaty, which states that should a member nation - which Turkey is - be attacked, other NATO members are compelled in a collective act of self-defense "such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area."

If NATO was looking for a fight, this would be a good opportuity to invoke Article 5. Panetta was asked about invoking Article 5 at a House Armed Services Committee hearing in April.

Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, may feel compelled to make a decisive response, said Hoover Institution's Fouad Ajami, who explained Erdogan is already under pressure after he turned against Syria's regime and called for the rescue of the Syrian people.

"I think it would be an embarrassment to Prime Minister Erdogan, because he has to make good on the threats that he has made," Ajami said in an interview with CNN's Candy Crowley broadcast on "John King, USA."

Turkey asks NATO to enforce no-fly zone in Syria according to US administration official

Turkey asks Nato about a no-fly zone

According to a US government source privy to the Nato meeting called by Turkey on Tuesday, Ankara has requested that the alliance draw up contingency plans for a no-fly zone to protect Turkish territory in the event of further acts of Syrian aggression. Turkey invoked Article IV of the Nato charter, which calls on the alliance to “consult” together whenever one of them deems that the “territorial integrity, political independence or security” of any member is threatened

US ship joins search for Turkish plane and pilots

Turkey's Foreign Ministry says a US deep-sea exploration vessel will help search Syrian waters for pilots missing from a Turkish military plane shot down by Syria.

A ministry official said the research vessel, E/V Nautilus, will set sail from Istanbul later Friday and is expected to join a search for the plane's wreckage early next week.

The official said Damascus had been notified that the ship would join the search, and Turkish officials would be on board to coordinate the mission. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

The E/V Nautilus was already in Turkey for an exploration of the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

Isn't the normally agreed Air exclusion zone normal 15miles from the coastline?

By international law, the notion of a country's sovereign airspace corresponds with the maritime definition of territorial waters as being 12 nautical miles (22.2 km) out from a nation's coastline.
