Rofl

And after double maths it will be... paganism: Schools told to put witchcraft and druids on RE syllabus

Paganism has been included in an official school religious education syllabus for the first time.

Cornwall Council has told its schools that pagan beliefs, which include witchcraft, druidism and the worship of ancient gods such as Thor, should be taught alongside Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

The requirements are spelled out in an agreed syllabus drawn up by Cornwall’s RE advisory group.

RE: UK Schools told to teach Witchcraft, and Devil worship during RE lessons.
These where things I was taught at my school about our heritage.. especially about the "cunning folk" as the Low magics have always held a high place locally. (this was in a Roman Catholic School) which I guess is why we have such a low count historically of witchcraft trials.. and the only 1 ended in execution, which really was for murder by poison.

Putting that to one side, do you think it should not be taught?

We still celebrate en mass (10s of thousands) the winter solstice, Lammas, Jack in the Green, the Wassail, on both the new an old 12th night, and various other *cough* non Christian events...

Heck if you look at the bonfire locally (Lewes) people get the district impression it is deeply pagan, (more Pagan-Christian) so i do not see why it should not be taught in schools..

strangely enough, Paganism seems to me to be strongest in those areas of Britain that are not Pro-Royalist...

What you're describing is neo-Paganism... I'd be interested to see what they put in the curriculum but based on the article it would seem more about the 'ancient' practices and some basic mythology although all the neopagan teachers will be eating their hearts out outside the curriculum...

I will be interesting to see how they handle it.. But I have to admit I have never thought about the term... Is neo-Paganism right? since it really doesn't appear to me to have changed much down the centuries, for here at least. Personally I would still consider it to be Blended-Christian, not pagan and certainly not neo-pagan, but still a topic that should be taught in Schools.

On some levels perhaps I would call it Commercial-Paganism??? as demonstrated by each of the major towns around here holding one of the main events e.g Lewes - Bonfire, Hastings - Jack in the Green, Eastbourne - Lammas, Brighton - Solstice etc, although a number of these are modern revivals, they are still like the bonefire, in that they never went away, they just didn't attract the tourists ;)

However that commercial side does detract from the fact that what people call paganism is still pretty much ingrained in our society, especially around here.

I think it's positive. the students will see the similarities between Christianity and pagans rituals..specifically Christmas, Easter, sun rise mass, ect..

Maybe people will start to think and question..
