The United States incarcerates more people than any other country in the world—more even than China or Russia. Prof. Daniel J. D'Amico explains that as of 2010 more than 1.6 million people were serving jail sentences in America. Professor D'Amico suggests that "prisons are not what we think about when we think of America, and they shouldn't have to be." According to D'Amico, a free country should not have 1.6 million people in prison, and a fiscally responsible country cannot afford to. As Prof. D'Amico points out, it is time for Americans to recognize that the U.S. criminal justice system is desperately in need of reform.

And all i see day in and day out are Americans constantly calling for MORE LAWS that can get people thrown in jail.

you mean the privatized prison business....... and the promotion of thug lifestyle music and video games, that encourage weak minded fools to act all "gangsta" which inevitably ends up in obvious illegal behaviour.... and the promotion of ridiculously worn "lo" pants and not tying your "kicks" so its really hard to outrun overweight cops.

Hell, in jail at least your basic necessities are taken care of. We have lots of bums walking the streets and people actually starving but we have enough resources to take care of everybody and then some. Sometimes I think people prefer jail over the reality of the life we live in. At least jail has structure. The problem is that it costs a lot to house all those prisoners, and it's a drain on the economy for the most part. Also, a lot of jails are for profit which makes the situation even worse. Welcome to American values and ethics. Nobody is free anymore in this country. Sometimes I wonder if we ever were free.

When the US government does the crime, NOBODY does the time. And yet, common Americans can be thrown in prison for jay-walking.

Doesn't it follow that most of our prisoners are "political" prisoners?

When I was a young man, I got tossed in the pokey for young man kind of stuff....
My bunkmate was a homeless guy. He got arrested for throwing a cinder block at a parked police car which was running with the officer in it.
He said he did it for a warm bed and three squares...

If prisons in America were like this, we wouldn't have a problem with our large prison population. American prisons are a cake walk compared to Black Dolphin. I guarantee you won't see people committing stupid crimes all the time if they knew they were at a risk to get sent here.
