Looks like a normal "5 Ton" military vehicle without the common canopy which gets worn out and ripped through the weather. Maybe they just found a better covering for the bed. Everything "military" is water proof anyway... what's the big deal?

So you're saying the mesh is just to support the cover and keep it from flapping around?

RE: Unusual ‘Transport’ Vehicle Causing Some Concern
I asked a buddy of mine who is active duty U.S. Army about these. Here is his response:

"it is a 5 Ton Transport Truck with a cage on the back. Why the cage? I can only imagine one reason. Never seen this. As far as I know only the Marines still use the old 5 Tons. I presume it's to give everybody a lift to their local FEMA Camp..... You know, to save gas."

He is a like minded individual and is ready to get the f*ck out of the military after 11 years. He was supposed to get out last month, but they stop timed him..... meaning that Uncle Scam still owns his ass. They told him just to get off base and go home and wait for his paperwork in the mail.

Well, the mesh could be anything. We could have fun with that all day. And it looks like we have... chuckle

Btw, nothing in the military is supposed to make any sense. So if your explanation is logical, it's likely wrong.

I'm just looking at it from a design angle. Form follows function.

Which might not be the smart way to do it, as you said.

I beg to differ. They don't trust you for shit when you're a new recruit. They sure as hell locked the doors when we rode around in the cattle cars. We did have windows, but they were like livestock trailers with a framework inside so you could stand up and hold on.
and we all know cattle stand up and hang on like that.lol nope can`t think of anything else they would be transporting with them except terrorist, dissidents, refugees, illegal aliens,or wildlife rescues, bears, alligators, mothmen lol etc.

Whatever dude. We called them cattle cars back then because that's what they probably were. Modified livestock trailers. That was about 20 years ago though, so things have probably changed a bit.

Headass

I agree with you on that. I remember all to well riding the "cattle cars"in basic training. I will never for get the ride from the in-processing station at Fort Leonardwood. It was quiet as can be with Sergeant Endersbee standing next to the door. When we arrived he said with a Missouri twang " you got 10 seconds to get off of my cattle car and 5 of them are used up" we all raced for the door carrying our duffel bags and when the wave of recruits got to the door he slammed it shut pinning several recruits against the door. As far as those transports pictured they do look weird and could very well be used to transport prisoners. They more than likely covered with canvas while in use.

First thing that comes to my mind is basic training. Riding around in one of those would be much better than the trailers we called cattle cars back in my day.

Bump

lol

They wouldn't have a door that locks on it if that was it nor would it 100% caged in. They would have shooting holes in it, so you can shoot back in case of attack. That thing is built to hold people inside and not have them leave when they want too.JhikpghfEnd

The only thing about it Solider is that back in the day our Government was not writing legislature into Law that would require such caged transports now did they?

Lets stop blue legging around and ask ourselves one simple question.

Is there a correlation of need, to legislation passed and equipment needed to enforce it?
