In a Godless world, how powerful is self-destructive idiocy?
Imagine turning on your TV set and seeing something like this—probably with soft piano music in the background.
“Hi. I’m George Clooney/Cheryl Crowe/Bill Gates/Maitreya the Exalted Teacher [plug in your favorite celebrity], and I’d like to talk to you about a really serious issue. Probably the most serious issue we will ever face…
“Scientists tell us that human population levels, worldwide, are unsustainable. That, unless we can ‘build down,’ and reduce our population in time to avoid disaster, everyone in the world is going to suffer horribly—from famine, from disease, from war…
“So, we’re looking for unselfish persons—maybe someone like you—who will take that first brave, loving step…
“The Adios! Pill from [plug in your favorite “green” company] guarantees you a quick, peaceful, painless exit from this overcrowded, troubled world. And best of all, it’s free! Just contact the Department of Health and Human Services, and Adios! will be delivered to your home.
“For a sustainable tomorrow for your children and grandchildren, take Adios! today…”
Let’s suppose that fantastic public service spot were actually broadcast on all the cable channels. How do you think people would react? Would anybody take that pill?
You’re darn tootin’ they would! But I don’t suppose the government would allow it. They’d be too afraid of losing a wildly disproportionate number of Democrat voters. Then again, when did death ever stop Democrats from voting?
Now, if you think any of the celebrities or scientists or public officials urging people to take the Adios! pill would ever take it themselves, you belong in the Ninnies Hall of Fame. Prince Phillip, who lives in unimaginable luxury paid for by others, says he’d like to be reincarnated as a virus that wipes out a big chunk of the human race. He certainly seems willing to wait a long time for that to happen! Meanwhile, you don’t see him volunteering to create a more sustainable environment by swapping Windsor Castle for a sod hut on the Scottish moors.
You don’t see the founders of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement in any hurry to make themselves extinct. You don’t see Paul Ehrlich subtracting himself from the unsustainable global population. Al Gore will give up his private jet before that happens.
Oh, but this is foolishness! No one could ever convince a whole bunch of people to kill themselves! That’s Jim Jones and the poison Kool-Aid crowd—it’d never work on normal people.
But all those folks who drank the poison Kool-Aid were normal people, once.
Remove the immutable laws of God—the true God, and the only God—from people’s hearts, and anything might happen. False gods make extravagant demands upon their worshippers—much more extravagant than anything the true God ever asks for. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as the Aztecs cutting the hearts from living human victims, or the Canaanites pitching their live children into a fire as an offering to Moloch. The secular state is a false god, an idol, and it seems content with confiscatory tax rates, teaching children that their parents’ core beliefs are contemptible and wrong, and touching off a world war now and then. Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s—your money, your children, and your life. All the rest, the state will let you keep. You won’t have to give up watching “Dancing With the Stars”!
