So I go to get a sandwich at lunch and the total is $2.99.

I pay with $3.00 and get a receipt back. That's all.

According to my math I'm supposed to get a penny back.

So I say: Excuse me. Are you out of penny's? (thinking maybe the cashier was out of penny's).

Cashier: No. Do you want your penny back?

Me: Yes... I work hard for my penny's.

Cashier: Rolls eyes.

Now I have been known to throw them in the little community penny dish or something but that's my decision to make after I get my change back.

It pissed me off. Do you care about your penny?

I care about my penny and would have asked for it as well. If it were a 95% copper penny, I'd toss it in my copper penny bucket at home and if not I'd toss it in my regular change bucket and cash it in after a while.

How can you tell the difference between a regular penny and a copper penny? And what do you do with the copper ones after you save them?

81 and older are copper unless you get one of the fairly rare (in circulation that is) steel pennies. Some 82's are 95% copper so you would have to either weigh them or learn the sound they make if you drop em, those that are mostly zinc sound different.
