The dry weather can and does I think. As the top layers lose moisture they are losing mass and shrink. But if that were the cause I think it would be getting exponentially worse over time?

I don't cut mine but once a month during the hot months and I never water it. Yes, it goes to seed and looks like hell for a while, but then I cut it on the highest setting, and it looks like a golf course, while all the other "Joneses" lawns look brown as hell. chuckle

Until a few years ago - the sewer pipes behind my house were terra cotta looking things that were crumbling. They replaced the pipes in my backyard -- but up the block - they still remain ancient pipes.

(Very interesting to talk with the water and sewer guys who work it everyday. )

A couple years ago - a fresh water line out front exploded into a wonderful geyser. They've patched and re-patched. Fresh water - still slowly seeps out. They know it.

Age is the main factor, this stuff isn't cheap to take care of and lets face it - governments are not very good at being proactive in nature to aging infrastructure but tend to be fairly reactive.

well yeah when you have no water or the sewer is f*cked up that tends to provoke a very rapid response. If it ain't broke don't fix it is the mantra that most water and sewer districts use.

ass backwards ^^^^^^^the less water used the more line pressure you have. The usage bleeds the pressure. If everyone shut off their water at once you'd have lines breaking all over the place.
