our nation's infrastructure was built in many places during the great depression and the rest was built right after WWII. It is falling apart, but nobody is willing to pay the taxes it would take to upgrade because we have become a nation of selfish greedy self centered citizens.

KETTERING, Ohio —

Drivers in the 1300 block of East Stroop Road found quite a sight late Saturday night when a water main break sprouted like Old Faithful.

The water main break was first reported at 11:50 p.m., and started shooting water at least 30 feet into the air.

Kettering police said they contacted the Montgomery County water department, and then closed East Stroop Road in that area.

The hole is in a 10-inch main, and left a large gap on East Stroop Road.

Well aging infrastructure is the main cause. The ground doesn't crack 3 or 4 feet down due to heat. Its dry so the ground is not water settling either, besides the fact that the ground will have settled out after a few years anyway. Not sure I buy that demand for the water is the reason either as that would tend to relieve line pressure. But with the dropping water table I surmise that an existing leak(not break) which had saturated the immediate area may settle if the water table drops. I think they probably had leaks going on and the dropping water table allowed for some settling. Water lines have thousands of leaks even if they are not apparent on the surface. And there is a big difference between a leak and a break in a waterline.

You'd be suprised at how fragile the asbestos water lines are. I have seen hundred year old cast iron main that looked pretty good. The ductile mains are pretty rugged and will take a lot. And the class 200 PVC is pretty much bulletproof. And yes I do know what I am talking about.

Sign of the times. No matter what the current condition of the climate, it seems that our infrastructure can never handle it. At the same time, governments make it illegal to collect rain water on ones own property. Me must COMPLY and RELY... gimme a break.

could the hot weather make the pipes expand and the ground shrink?

the ground depending on the soil makeup shifts and would be a factor astro--

the huge metal pipes wouldn't expand.it is the soil, age of the pipes..if there is a small weak area the pressure can erode and then burst with the
stress of water useage..

water usage would relieve pressure not increase it. The maximum line pressure you will ever have is when no water is being used.

Go ahead a do a news search for water main breaks in the past 24 hours.

Pretty interesting.

Either way it's time to cut back on water use, everyone. Please.

I was super tired after getting the kids to bed last night so I did not start a thread but wanted to, about ideas we all have about how to conserve water. I agree that time has come.

RE: Water Mains Popping All Over! Cause "Unknown"?
last year we had over 3000 water main breaks going at once with a continuing number added as the pipes were fixed, this went on for weeks during our drought here in texas. Houston alone amassed millions in losses during this period in water and overtime.
It will stop when the drought stops, remember the lines they fixed broke in many cases as soil moved unevenly as it shrunk, its a good bet the fixed pipes will break again after first few rains and the soil reexpands or saturates these lines again will be stretched to thier maxium tensile strength. The cause is not unknown. US Infrastructure is old, and falling apart.

Republicans refuse to allow any major Infrastructure repair/stimulus projects to move forward.

The infrastructure is falling. The stuff is old. This weather would be a push for even modern systems, I'd bet. But with the sink holes everywhere, that black gunk down in South America, it's not impossible it could have something to do with an earth change.

Is earthquake doom still on?

Age is the main factor, this stuff isn't cheap to take care of and lets face it - governments are not very good at being proactive in nature to aging infrastructure but tend to be fairly reactive.
