The joke was a parody of the opening line of that day's speech:
"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you that today I signed legislation that will allow student religious groups to begin enjoying a right they've too long been denied — the freedom to meet in public high schools during nonschool hours, just as other student groups are allowed to do."
Contrary to popular misconception, this microphone gaffe was not broadcast over the air, but rather leaked later to the general populace. But the Tokyo newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported in October 1984 that the Soviet Far East Army was placed on alert after word of the statement got out, and that the alert was not withdrawn until 30 minutes later. Congressman Michael Barnes (D-Md.) confirmed that information with then Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. There was no report of any change in the DEFCON level for the United States.
Though this was not the first time Reagan had joked prior to giving a speech or address, the Soviet official news agency, TASS, condemned the joke, declaring that "The USSR condemns this unprecedented and hostile attack by the US President" and that "this kind of behavior is incompatible with the great responsibility borne by heads of nuclear states for the destinies of their own people and mankind"

That quote combined w/the bogus "star wars defense" so psyched the russians , that shortly there after...the wall came tumbling down & the "Evil Empire" COLLAPSED...as a result of Reagans bluffs...!!!! Lmao

Reagan had his faults, but he also had a way of making the American people fell GOOD about their nation and their future, and some of his policies created a massive wave of economic growth that went almost into the current century.

As a matter of fact, many kudos are often given to Blowjob Billy Bob for his great economy, but all Clinton really did was preside of the end of the Reagan growth period, leave it alone and not frak it up.

I'm convinced that Reagan was easily one of this nations top five presidents EVER, if not ranking even higher than that.

Beyond any of that, Ronnie just plain had BALLS, as illustrated by this little incident. I for one LIKE that, and submit to you that BALLS are a train that no US president since then has had.
