Tests show dead seals with flu virus
Wire and Staff Reports
The Gloucester Daily Times Sun Nov 06, 2011, 11:48 PM EST

Federal officials are stepping up an investigation into the deaths of 146 harbor seals along the New England coast since September after samples of five of them tested positive for the Influenza A virus, authorities say.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced that the deaths have been declared "an unusual event," enabling the agency to pour more resources into the probe.

RE: Whale watching & seal dead with flu virus, an unusual event apparently
A month ago scientist said it was unusual for whales to wash up dead and are more likley to strand in poor health. Now they are saying it's normal, and they get "tired" during their migration. Whales that are fit enough to have babies get "tired" and die without beaching. Yeah right.

From June

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says samples taken from a dead whale will be given to scientists.

A juvenile humpback washed ashore at Northcliffe on the northern Gold Coast yesterday afternoon.

The Gold Coast City Council removed the whale's body from Narrowneck overnight.

Authorities say it probably died of natural causes.

Acting regional manager of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, Nicola Udy, says there was no indication of injury and specimens will be examined...........

Ms Udy says the number of whale deaths is growing as more of the mammals move through the area.

RE: Whale watching & seal dead with flu virus, an unusual event apparently
A newborn Orca whale that washed up off Seaview, Wash. Monday liked died from complications of a hiatal hernia, said Tiffany Boothe, spokeswoman for the Seaside Aquarium...

Because the umbilical cord was still attached, it was initially thought the whale may have been still born, but a necropsy performed at Portland State University indicated the Orca had air in her lungs and milk in her stomach. The whale measured just under eight feet in length, slightly smaller than usual for a newborn, Boothe said...

RE: Whale watching & seal dead with flu virus, an unusual event apparently
According to TDSHS, there are three types of flu virus: A, B, and C. Type A virus infects people, birds, pigs, horses, seals, whales, and other animals. Wild birds are the natural hosts for these viruses. Type B virus is usually found only in humans, while Type C causes mild illness in people.

All three types of viruses are associated with seasonal flu. Avian influenza or bird flu is an infection caused by bird flu viruses. These bird flu viruses occur naturally among birds worldwide, and rarely is transmission spread from sick or dead birds to humans.

(past article said flu virus A in seals (happening now) is unusual, this one says it's normal) Whats the truth?
