one of the things I would have to "give up" would be coming to and reading shit on this website!! I get so angry at some of the comments - true bliss, no LOP - sorry.

One could give up anything and everything, thinking that these would eventually lead to happiness. Not knowing that the first thing to do to find genuine happiness is to give up what we think we should do and do what we love to do.

Physical pain. Easily give that up.

Do you suffer chronic pain? If so I am sorry to hear it. You don't seem to let it engulf your world view. You definitely have the aura of a happy warrior about you, or so it appears to me. But pain is antithetical to comfort, not happiness. There are many miserable people who have never known pain, and many contented people who suffer it but are not its victim. Anyway, all the best to you.

You ain't gotta give up shit. It is your choice, always.
"be the ball"
"go for it"
But learn what the hell it is.

Reach in, give out. Reach in, give out. That's where happiness lives.

If that fails, reach over and grab a cold beer.

All this reaching and grabbing tires me out. Much easier to give up wanting or needing anything more, especially if I'm betting my state of happiness on whether I get it or not. I'm a little bit of the hedonist myself. I enjoy what comes my way, but being in a perpetual state of need automatically means you're in a perpetual state of lack. Anyway, that's just how I see it.

Cheers

Sometimes it pays to turn questions on their head. We usually think of happiness as some state we must obtain, so when we think about what will make us happy we often start a mental list of stuff we need. And by "stuff" I mean not only what money buys, but what we expect from the world and other people. You might say we crave happiness.

Don't get me wrong. There are things we need in life, that the lack of can severely test our capacity for happiness. Food, shelter and refuge from violence come to mind. Since we are social animals, companionship is important too, but not critical most of the time.

Ironically it's the "pursuit" of happiness that keeps us from seeing that happiness is our natural condition. Wanting and want are the same thing.

So what would you give up "wanting" if in so doing you opened your eyes to contentment?

Good Post.

RE: What Would You Give Up For Happiness?
I've only read some of the first two pages, but it occurs to me that in answering this question I realize I am happy

I am a happy person, people that know me always say I am the bright spot in their day, people I pass on sidewalks often smile back and speak--I acknowledge everyone because everyone matters.

I hum or sing to myself when I walk, which is more like a happy skipping along--seriously!!

So what did I give [up]?

I given understanding to those around me.

I give acceptance to those around me.

I give love to those around me.

I gave up my preconceptions of other people.

I gave up assuming I'm always right.

I gave up personal privacy and share the fun things I do here for others to enjoy, even if it means posting a picture of me with screwed up blue hair for folks to laugh at when coloring my hair to fly my freak flag went horribly wrong! Anon

All things considered, the more I have given up, the more I have given away to others of myself the happier I become!

I guess I'm just contrary!! 1dunno1

In the end each other is all we have.

Thanks for that, it was good to read. I guess when you give you are "giving up" something. Giving up preconceptions reminded me of the old line, never expect things from people and you'll never be disappointed.
