There are some tradeoffs.
Now come up with a list of benifits (benefits is what I presume your learned mind means) that would not otherwise exist without it.
I'll help get you started.
1. Modern Medicine.
2. Cars.
3. The Internet
4. Computers.
5. Some assurance that those who commit (direct)crimes against you will be caught and dealt with.
You keep going.
Think I'm wrong?
Tell me what fantastic inventions came out of countries without rules like these. Tell me about how much safer 3rd world shitholes are than where you are right now is.
There were many innovative inventions well before the time of patents in what YOU would call 3rd world countries.
Quite a few contemporary inventions were based on the rediscovery of ancient findings.
Any inventions made in 3rd world countries recently would have even more difficulty in getting their products to market that those inventors in the 1st world who have been ruined, silenced or killed if their inventions will have any affect on the state of play in our current civilization.
1.8 million years ago: Fire and then cooking (3rd world Africa)
500 thousand years ago ;Shelter construction (3rd world Africa)
400 ka: Pigments in Zambia (3rd world Africa)
5th c. BC: Cast iron (3rd world Asia)
Early 3rd c. BC: Canal lock (3rd world Africa)
210 BC: Dry dock (3rd world Africa)
2nd c. BC: Paper (3rd world Asia)
Late 3rd–early 4th c.: Turbine (3rd world Africa)
1119: Mariner's compass (3rd world Asia)
The potters wheel - 2400 BCE
Folding Stool 2000 BCE
Tumbler Lock 1000 BCE
Lighthouse 300 BCE
Steam Engine 100 CE
and on and on but I haven't the time. Do your own research.
Oh and just to quote the 3rd man - Switzerland - 1st world country for a long time - inventions in 300 years - the cuckoo clock (until acid).
Who shall guard our guardians? (
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? )
A civilized question from 1st/2nd century - and you think we are more civilized now?
If you do not have a choice, it is not civilization, it is slavery.
1. Modern medicine - It should be my choice what I put in or allow to be done to my body. Don't hear a lot about Cancer, ms, Alzheimer's and bse pre ' modern medicine'. - part of the modern Hippocratic oath says -
I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.
In the United States physicians are not required to take the oath. - Well at least they are not being made seasoned liars as the Brits are .
2. Cars! They are a faster mechanical version of the horse. Civilization did all right without them. They even measure them in horse power. They are polluting 'civilization' and the fuel they use is filthy (in more ways than one).
3. The internet. Firstly, putting the internet before the computer is a bit like putting the cart before the horse. Tim Berners-Lee (who if you look up the internet on wiki has been written out and the good ol US of A written in - sophistry - www or non www it is the same thing.) gave it as an open source app to avoid the constrictures of centralization. They are still trying to figure out how to censure it completely effectively.
4. Computers. What have computers got to do with allowing your rights lo LIFE on this planet and civilization. With a good sand filter and a solar pad you can use one in the Sahara - what are you talking about?
5. The only assurance you have is that if the criminals who hurt you are not well connected enough, something might happen, but be assured, the majority of those running the show are criminals.
As a Brit, I am unable to live in the land of my birth as a free person. (probably pretty much the same in all 'civilized' countries now)
(in 1110 I would have had to pay a 1/10 of my income or the fruits of my labour to my feudal lord) NOW it is about 40% directly and another 40% indirectly)
If I own my own house, I have to PAY RENT to live in it. (Imagine, you want to opt out - you have a piece of land where you will be self sufficient - well think again - you then have to earn enough to pay to live on your own land - even if you live AWAY from civilization). When I die, my kids have to sell it to pay the taxes.
At any time it suits them, Your children may be taken by the state and put into a pedophile market (childrens home) - you may be taken by the state and locked up and drugged if you don't tow the line.
What makes you think that 'civilization' has a right to OWN me?
Back to OP. I know how you feel mate!
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot grow a marijuana plant for myself?
You are not allowed to grow it or ingest it because it may make you think outside the box (unlike alcohol which is not only legal but on every corner) it may also make you realize that war is bad and that our civilization is not worth the price.
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot brew my own moonshine?
Because 'they' have the monopoly.
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot collect and drink raw milk?
Because it may be good for you and we are no longer allowed food, (unless you are rich enough) we are being conditioned to accept and eat INDUSTRIAL WASTE.
Check out the labels, check out the bread! ( If the shit in there is less than 5% they don't even have to tell you)
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot take my own life if I am terminally ill?
Those who want to pretend that they care one jot about the sanctity of life want you to take the pills, make them money and suffer - you can if you can AFFORD it, you just travel to somewhere else.
What gives people the right to tell me I must pay council tax to fund criminal wars?
Don't be silly, they aren't criminal wars, they are DEFENSE. The Iraqis, Afghanis, Libyans etc are all poised just off Dover waiting to eat your babies. You are giving up your freedom for security....lol.
What gives people the right to tell me I must have my wages paid into a bank?
The banks own you and everything else.
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot defend myself in my own house?
Well that would make you a criminal, you might hurt someone who breaks in. (It's not your house - it is now leasehold.)
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot photograph in London?I am surprised you are even allowed to take a dump without a tax or a license.(It will no doubt come soon enough in the form of a methane tax)
What gives people the right to tell me I have to give all my personal details to Lockheed Martin?
You don't. I am now a criminal for not doing so. Actually you have a DUTY to not give your details to a foreign warmongering arms dealer, something most people don't even consider.
What gives people the right to tell me I have no right to privacy anymore?
You don't - you are a vassal. We are all watched 24/7 BUT those who make all these silly laws and implement them have - closed sessions and matters of national security to keep their goings on and criminal activities secret.
What gives people the right to tell me I cannot grow my own food? The might of those who want you to eat their INDUSTRIAL WASTE.
On the other hand, look on the bright side.
The curtailing of your freedom is facilitating the freedom of our governments to export their version of civilization to another bunch of humans and other assorted creatures who don't want it.
You are not alone.
Rant off.
