I'm not sure if it's considered a sub-compact but the Makarov is an excellant handgun in that price range. and they can fairly easily be converted from 9mm Makarov to .380 ACP if so desired.

makarov...honestly never heard of it...I'm a newbie to guns...I would need a picture..

It is a shit russian pistol. I dont know about the ones who are sold in USA, but the russian made ones, are a real piece of Shit.

The best pistol I used and never changed it since then is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta_92. it will never jam on you, and will always do what is been made to do for you and dead accurate.

Also though I doubt you can have this one as is not legal this is a very good toy. in .177chuckle

One thing I like about the .357/.38spec round is it's versatility. Pick up one of these and you have a good medium range hunting rifle that uses the same ammo as your defense weapon.

Just a few thoughts, the lcp is really a backup weapon - go handle one, you probably will not like the trigger -- long hard pull.

I tried the lcp and bought the SW .380 bodyguard instead.

Typically the .357 is not a subcompact round.

The XD40 is great as set out above.

Hard Hawk is correct about the Beretta - but the Taurus is several hundred cheaper and pretty much the same gun. Although they are not subcompact they hold more rounds.

Given the fact that this is your SHTF BOB weapon and assuming you could take only one, .357/.38 revolver FTW for simplicity and sheer stopping power.

Of course, YMMV.

Let us know how it works out.

RE: What is the best sub compact semi automatic handgun?
If you're looking for a cheap small .357, check out the rossi snubnose .357. They run around $300 and has a lifetime warranty (although those I know with them never used it).

I saw someone mention hi point handguns. My experience with a hi point 9mm was good, it never failed in the 1000 rounds I put through it before I gave it to someone as a present, and it has yet to fail on them. HOWEVER, it does not meet your prerequisite on small, because even though its called a compact, it is no such thing.

My bias recommendation-Glock 26, the baby glock. 9mm, subcompact, accepts any glock 9mm magazine, very concealable, very managable (moreso than many subcompacts/pocket guns). They tend to check out for $450.

It has to start somewhere
It has to start sometime
What better place than here?
What better time than now?

I think I should handle all of them too.
Really leaning between the lcp and the xd now...just too much recoil in the magnum...

The reason I wanted a glock was because supposedly you never had to clean them...less gear to carry..but they are expensive!
I was told about the no cleaning by an unreliable source ie..just another guy in the shop.
