I'm installing a new operating system and need to really scrub the hard drive. I plan on scrubbing it repeatedly before the new installation.

Anyone have a favorite FREE product?

ccleaner,,,its free

under tools it has a drive wiper that can do up to 35 passes, more secure than DOD.

So, once it's complete, there is no more Windows operating system? You would have to install a new operating system from a bootable disc to use the computer at that point? I have to clarify that because it seems unlikely. Obviously, CC Cleaner would be gone once the process is complete.

Is that really how it works?

What was intended, but not stated for the OP.

Take the harddrive out of your computer and add it to another computer as a data drive(not booting to it).

From that other computer, you can:
1) do a quick format on the harddrive.
(fast but only removes pointers to data, not the data itself.)
2) do a full format on the harddrive>
(This will be time consuming, but will over write all the drive)
3) download a program and do a "low level" format of the drive.
( this will be VERY time-consuming!!!)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard...Tool.shtml

"Being limited to just 50 MB/s, it might take a while for the process to finish, so it takes approximately 12 hours for a 2 TB drive to be processed."

4) take off any data you want to keep...
just start to reload windows...When you get to the part about loading into existing partion, delete the partion, recreate a partion and load the OS.

5) same as above, but keep the partion and load on same partion. As it loads, it will overwrite the data on the drive.

Hope this helps!!!

Sorry, it's not free but I love White Canyon Wipe Drive System Saver - it's seen me through several serious viruses.

This program will wipe your files while keeping Windows intact. There will be a lot of work re-installing programs after but it saves your system. They also sell just a Wipe Drive but you will have to rinstall Windows after.

I also run this before donating a computer - I hate wasting anything by throwing it away when someone else could use it.

Hope this helps.

I hate the keylogger installed on my computer. It's renamed, but I've seen the "program is not responding" with a keylogger.exe as the program. So, it's here somewhere and it's been renamed so it can't be located.

Keylogger appeared right after IP ban from you know where. Computer instantly became very, very slow. I didn't hang out there very much, so I don't know why they'd do that. I didn't post anything on their site and barely read anything.

What would Skippy do?

Buy a new drive, install. Take the old drive apart and take out the disks. They make nice signal mirrors for when your in survival mod. I have two hanging off my deck..pretty...

Interesting. My Yahoo mail account was hacked right after my ban from there.

RE: What's the best hard drive scrubber?
repartition the drive then quick format it, install the os, then fill the hard disk up with data

its as simple as that, ive spent many years in the recovery industry, i can guarantee you the ability to recover data is pure theory at best.

a couple of defrags after copying data to the disk will make it even less possible to obtain fragments of info.

Just format it in windows setup dude.

You aren't going to erase anything additional by using a 3rd party program.
