Its pretty much the arc of all these networks. Build a fan base and then switch them to lifestyle programming, and more importantly, advertising.

There is very little substance (information of value) left on American television.

Just as well - time to turn it off and pay attention to real things anyway.

The History Channel used to be so much different. At first it was very boring and historical, then some sensationalism took place but made it more interesting and finally they switched the entire format of the network to support reality TV even if it has nothing at all to do with history. What they are putting on now simply gets better ratings and that trumps everything.

It used to be the "All Nazis All The Time" channel, that's about the time I stopped watching it, I guess they finally ran out of Nazi footage.

Old and/or studious people don't buy crap. It actually costs a ton of money to put on the good stuff they used to produce, and then the advertisers pulled out 'cause the audience did not buy anything or were set in their ways/brands.

Lifestyle shows target impulsive people who will switch brands or buy new products like a george foreman grill.

Ironic for people like Newt Gingrich, PBS is the only network that will show documentaries about the things Newt thinks are important.

It's not about being a snob. It's about all these networks pandering more and more to the lowest common denominator of human society.

I know that's where the ratings are and that's what drives programming, but I detest those kinds of shows. To me, these shows are little more than a Springer episode with the scenery changed.

I used to could avoid these shows by watching the History Channel, then it fell to the reality shows, but I had H2, Now H2 is falling fast to the reality quagmire.

I just wish people didn't get off on watching other peoples personal drama. Then there wouldn't be a demand. But unfortunately, most people don't care to question the bigger things in life, it's all about what our neighbor is doing.
