They worshipped people as planets (and the sun). As above so below.

It's kind of the pagan version of being immortal, instead of going to "heaven" they become a planet (they become heaven).

Oh and to address the temples, I believe they are related to the planets as well. You'd have Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Neptune, Mercury, Marduk (?), and (likely) the sun. I'm not sure about marduk though...nimrod was referred to as several things including: the sun, jupiter, and marduk. Venus was semiramis (apparently). Basically, these temples were probably syncretic, different regions worshipped these characters as different entities so they built these temples for conversion by retaining those temples that were worshipping the same guy. Everything got fubar when the tower of babel fell.

In examining all of the answers so far I still can't see what they got out of it. Most people do things that gain them advantage, what was the advantage in worshiping planets?

As foe the Temples what exactly was the things done at each Temple and what made them different.
For instance what did people do at the Temple of Bacchus and why? How does this relate to Planets?

There were Seven distinct Temples all with a different flavor and focus, how do these activities done at each temple relate to the Gods or planets?

I'm assuming you're a christian. So whatever you get from worshiping your god and Jesus is the exact same thing the Greeks and Romans got from worshiping their gods, and at least they could see their gods.

My guess is that they are literally alive. Some talk about them like they are people battling each other. For example there is a story that Gaia aka earth gave Saturn a sword to defeat Uranus and cast them out of heaven. This sounds a lot to me like the fall of 1/3 of heaven as Uranus and Neptune and possibly Pluto where sent to back of the line away from the source of power in our universe the sun!

You assume wrong.

Some people here at LOP claim to have knowledge of the Gods being planets as worshiped by the Greeks and romans and incorporated into the Christian religion. But their knowledge is second hand from dry books and they don't seem to be seeing to forest for the trees.

I am just asking why and what would anyone be doing at the Temple of Bacchus drinking and binging on as much wine as possible in relation to God Planets and presumably as you suggested Eternal life after death.

There were Seven different Temples all with different slants, views, rituals and practices.
The Average Roman and Greek might visit and use the facilities of all of these Temples depending on their mood.

I am sure I know what these Temples and religions (NOT) were about but do these people who claim the God were planets understand what went on in these places and why.

So a lateral question designed to provoke thinking but people seem to be thinking emotionally today and defending someone else's opinion rather than generating their own with some sense of logic behind it.

They knew them as the wandering stars. They were the ones who did not rotate in sync with the other stars. So they only knew of the planets visible to the naked eye.

The word planet is derived from the greek and means wanderer.
To the ancients the erratic movement of the planets when view from Earth marked them as special against the orderly procession of the other heavenly bodies.

As to why all the different temples and symbolism one has to be able to view life from their perspective, Roman and Greek gods had all the attributes of man, his desires, failings etc etc. The gods were more humanistic and the fortunes of life with all its ups and downs could easily be related to the fickle nature of the gods in relation to the average Roman or Greek. That is something the 3 main modern religions have failed to do as it is all god's will and the explanation is left as that....
