Recently, I have had a lot of conversations with atheists. Many express a strong hatred of God. I have been at a loss to explain this. How can you hate someone you don’t believe in? Why the hostility? If God does not exist, shouldn’t atheists just relax and seek a good time before they become plant food? Why should it matter if people believe in God? Nothing matters if atheism is true.

Aldous Huxley (1894–1963), the brother of the atheistic evolutionist Sir Julian Huxley, advocated a drug-fuelled utopia. He gave the reason for his anti-Christian stance:

If God does not exist, shouldn’t atheists just relax and seek a good time before they become plant food? Why should it matter if people believe in God?

Atheists dont believe in God so to say they hate God to them wont make sense. They hate theists.

I think they hate nonsense which the bible is brimming full of. Too bad they are closed off to other ideas though.

How would an atheist hate a God that he or she doesn't even believe exist?

We don't. But some atheists are so hostile to believers it seems that way.

Well a true atheist doesn't believe in god so they cannot hate god.

Maybe the people you were talking to are still in a transition stage. They are at the point in their lives where they are trying to break free from childhood programing and so they "hate" the concept of something they were forced to believe in.

It can be a confusing time, I know I went through at age 12.

Well I've seen some people here criticize the character "God" from the bible because he's not always nice or rational or fair. Often isn't in the Old Testament.

That doesn't mean they believe in him. It's a rhetorical thing.

I'd like the hostility between atheists and believers to diminish here.

I doubt it will, but I'm not an evangelical atheist, I support freedom of religion. I know a lot of people here who are atheists are outright hostile to religious stuff, and I used to be like that, but I was allowed to choose not to attend church a long time ago, so it's not something that's an irritant to me. Live and let live.

Religious threads don't bother me as long as they are interesting, and not just copy-pasta preaching. There's a lot of interesting stuff regarding religion.

They hate theology and dogma for the most part. If they express a hatred of god, it a hatred of the ills that come about for mistaking theology and dogma for god. Huxley was an existentialist. It's a human centric philosophy, but one that cares deeply for finding meaning in life through one's own choices and action. If it hedonistic, it is an enlightened hedonism. Which frankly, is a pretty wise choice.
