For 12 hours, two herds of wild South African elephants slowly made their way through the Zululand bush until they reached the house of late author Lawrence Anthony, the conservationist who saved their lives.The formerly violent, rogue elephants, destined to be shot a few years ago as pests, were rescued and rehabilitated by Anthony, who had grown up in the bush and was known as the “Elephant Whisperer.”

For two days the herds loitered at Anthony’s rural compound on the vast Thula Thula game reserve in the South African KwaZulu – to say good-bye to the man they loved. But how did they know he had died March 7? Known for his unique ability to calm traumatized elephants, Anthony had become a legend. He is the author of three books, Baghdad Ark, detailing his efforts to rescue the animals at Baghdad Zoo during the Iraqi war, the forthcoming The Last Rhinos, and his bestselling The Elephant Whisperer.

I've always felt that elephants were far more complex than man gives them credit for.

Heard 3 psychics being interviewed. When asked - where is the worse place you've ever been (psychic-wise)?

They ALL answered zoos. They said the animals pain was palpable.

Myth Busters did a myth to see if elephants were really scared of mice...They are! The one elephant saw the mouse come out of a fake poop and he stoped and moved back kind of fast.

One of the "false imaginings" we harbor is that human beings are superior to all other creatures because we are far more intelligent.

We aren't.

Living creatures could never have survived for hundreds of thousands of years in the hostile environment of this planet if they weren't intelligent.

Lack of intelligence would have led to their speedy extinction.

This is something the human race is about to prove.

Elephants are one of the few animals who extend their empathy to other species. There's a great story in the book "When Elephants Weep" that illustrates that. A group of elephants work together to pull a baby rhino who is stuck and sinking into a muddy riverbank and reuniting him with his mother. A great read if your interested in the emotional lives of animals.
