Heating with wood for most of 32 years now with an old Rite Way stove that has seen 32 winters and is still going strong. I had two cords of seasoned oak delivered today for $310. That is equal in heat output to about 500 gallons of heating oil. Or at today's prices about $2,000 in oil.

We do up at the cabin, aspen, oak and cedar.

We do up at the cabin, aspen, oak and cedar.

I envy you burning cedar. Only got to burn a little of it over the years but what an incredible smell. You must be west coast. Here in PA it is all mixed hardwoods. Lots of oak, ash, hickory and apple wood.

So let's divide cost of chain saw by say,.. 10 yrs of life.
$50
1 chain per year $20
2 gallons of gas $8
Fuel addative $2
Gas 4 truck to get it home $4 (cut off my own property)
Axe over 10 yrs $2
Let's call that $90 for this years heat.

I keep my mother's two woodstoves going next door. Wood is much more expensive here in California, we pay around $250 per cord of oak, mostly blue, black and live oak.

We also get some red cedar for kindling and it smells oh so good! I love splitting cedar and will sit there with a hatchet making pencil size kindling for hours. I had to start putting a glove on the wood holding hand because I finally took a big gouge out of my left index finger.

I am hoping to have a tiny woodstove installed in my place when I get the flooring finally done. Nothing heats like wood!

In my 20's I did it even cheaper but worked ten times harder. Cut all my wood with a bow saw and ax. It was a great way to keep in shape. These days I rather buy the wood. It is still so much cheaper than oil or gas.

I know exactly what you mean. A 70 degree house heated by a wood stove just feels so much warmer than any other method. One good way to make it feel warmer and less dry is to keep kettles boiling away on the stove top.

I also use my stove to make stews, soups and pasta sauces and even fry steaks in a pan all winter long. That eliminates the gas bill for the regular stove all winter.

Wood 100% here. Do you mix your oak with other woods too? Oak only can destroy fireplaces i've heard. Btw, how much is a cord?

We built a nice stove out of an old 100 gallon propane tank for our hunting camp.It easily heats a 4 room cabin (3 bunk rooms and a bath room).We've used it for about 10 years or so.Burn alotta oak that we get ourselves thru out the year from Management areas.

It's Florida so we only get about 6 weeks of good cold air(20s in the morning up to the 50s during the day).

Wood 100% here. Do you mix your oak with other woods too? Oak only can destroy fireplaces i've heard. Btw, how much is a cord?

I paid $160 today for one cord of all red oak with no bark and $150 for a cord of mixed red and white oak with some bark. I have burned mostly all oak for years in the old woodstove with no damage.

Black locust can burn so hot it will warp a stove.

I would be happy to trade you a few windy mornings where it is 10 below zero. Stove will keep it in the 60's in here on a morning that cold as long as it is cranking full blast.

Yes minus 10 F. In C -23.3333 so brrrrr cold.

I love heating with wood. The smells and even the work of it are fun. There is no better way to cook certain stews or even a pot roast than on a stove. If your pot starts to boil put it up on a brick and let simmer.

Yes but I dont know what a chord is. Burnt 10 meters of seasoned messmate (it's home grown storm blown). Have a little Morsø, it's cuddly.

Aspen and Pine local, less local cedar but will buy and bring up, good mixture.
