Working Assault Rifle made on 3D printer
http://www.popsci.com/technology/article...-d-printer

Once this technology is widely available, the internet will have to become tightly controlled and I suspect it will change beyond all recognition before long. I wonder if there will be a whole wealth of new civil servants who's job it is to monitor and control our activity on the internet.

The headline is an outright lie. He made a lower receiver not the entire weapon. Yet no mention of that fact in the entire article.

So much for journalistic integrity.

^Here is a picture of the only component that was printed. A far cry from an actual working .22 pistol. Where do the bullets go John?

Badass! that's a hell of a lot cheaper than an injection molding machine which usually run $500,000 not including the Die needed

Wow! It's not everyday that you see an application of engineering technology that will change the world so certainly. An enthusiastic 5*, thanks for posting!

No no no, this guy obviously just skimmed the article for the link. He made both a fully functional pistol, and an entire working assault rifle. He only posted the lower receiver design to the 3-d schematic site as a sociopolitical and legal test.

I don't know much about guns, but im assuming this is the part that determines whether the weapon is semiauto or fully automatic... i would guess for personal liability he posted a semiauto version, but its an interesting choice on his part if this is the case, because its the one part that could be modified with political implications.

Someone said though that 3d printers can't print metal, so how were the internals made?

Goddamnit, can we please call it a "semi-automatic carbine" instead of "assault rifle"?

And as was pointed out earlier, there's no f'ing way they made a barrel that wouldn't 'splode on first shot from plastic.

Good for him, I eagerly await the shell shock anti-gun folks who cry arrest him, he made a gun! A lot of people don't realize it's legal to make your own firearm (with a few restrictions) as a non-licensee (as in not having a FFL07 or better license) so long as you are making it for your own personal use and are not prohibited from owning a firearm and the firearm you make meets all existing regulations - i.e. if you make a shotgun with a barrel less than 18" you could still build it but need the requisite $200 tax stamp.

The line between the 1st and 2nd amendments just got blurrier than its ever been in known history. This is destined to become the foremost political divide.
