Yep, they tiled the floor with pennies .......
About $350 dollars worth which was considerably cheaper than the $800 the new tile would have cost. Once done, everything was sealed using Diamond Coat polyurethane.

$800...?

I tiled 80 square feet of a solarium for around $150, with tile, mortar and grout.

that kitchen doesn't look much bigger...or maybe I've not seen the entire floor they covered...?

Pennies are not legal tender. You can't pay your taxes with them.

I guess it's no different than those bars you go in that have dollar bill's all over the ceiling with messages on them.
I this case, the pennies aren't being defaced or destroyed.

That's just what ive heard, i suppose i should have included that disclaimer... but i remember these souvenir penny presses since i was a little kid. one day i started seeing nickel and even a few quarter versions, but they disappeared quickly. why do the penny versions still persist if there isnt some truth to this?

Oh I don't have a problem with it. It's cool. Creative. If we're still here a year from now you should bump this thread with an updated image. I'd love to see how it held up...

You can't melt down the pre 82' ones for triple there face value either. Nice floor also. When I'm not renting any more that looks like the kitchen floor I would love to have.

RE: Yep, they tiled the floor with pennies .......
Snopes:

Quote:Up until the late 19th century, pennies and nickels weren't legal tender at all. The Coinage Acts of 1873 and 1879 made them legal tender for debts up to 25 cents only, while the other fractional coins (dimes, quarters, and half dollars) were legal tender for amounts up to $10. This remained the law until the Coinage Act of 1965 specified that all U.S. coins are legal tender in any amount. However, even in cases where legal tender has been agreed to as a form of payment, private businesses are still free to specify which forms of legal tender they will accept. If a restaurant doesn't want to take any currency larger than $20 bills, or they don't want to take pennies at all, or they want to be paid in nothing but dimes, they're entitled to do so (but, as mentioned earlier, they should specify their payment policies before entering into transactions with buyers). Businesses are free to accept or reject pennies as they see fit; no law specifies that pennies cease to be considered legal tender when proffered in quantities over a particular amount.

http://www.snopes.com/business/money/pennies.asp

Since the denigration of currency metals, pennies are not specifically excepted. But my question remains. Why are souvenir penny presses tolerated, then?

I hope they used superglue underneath those pennies or they are going to lift after a very short while...even with polyurethane over the top.
