Exploiting optically clear substrates via RF emission (leaking signals from your digital appliances) they have engineered your cell phone to harvest said signals, assemble the data into packages which ride the transmission link to the trunk, then are peeled off and unpackaged at the fusion center for analysis / storage.

Simply put: They are harvesting localized electronic emanations from keyboards, displays, and WiFi / BT, and sending the data to the mother ship transparently via your cellphone. Carrier IQ was just the beginning.

Keystrokes.
Screen captures.
VOIP.
Much, much more.

Your cell phone is the multifunction transmitter.

are average people such a thrill to watch or are they just bored?

oh and who are 'they' that are watching us

Total Information Awareness.

Proof of concept from DARPA in 2004, leading to production level device integration in 2007 originally intended for compromising COMSEC within an espionage venue.

Re-purposed for civilian sector use in 2010.

RE: Your Cell Phone: The Spy Within
Total Information Awareness (TIA) is the name of a massive U.S. data mining project focused on scanning travel, financial and other data from public and private sources with the goal of detecting and preventing transnational threats to national security. TIA has also been called Terrorism Information Awareness. The program was part of the Homeland Security Act and, after its creation in January 2003, was managed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). In September 2003, U.S. Congressional negotiators agreed to terminate the program and ceased funding. in 2006, however, news agencies reported that software developed for it had been shifted to other agencies, specifically the National Security Agency (NSA).

TIA initiatives included a massive counter-terrorism database and advanced methods for data collection, processing and analysis. At the time, technology capable of accomplishing some of the program's data mining goals had not yet been invented. For example, one component of the system was a technology that enabled unilingual English speakers to monitor information in other languages. To that end, DARPA began awarding contracts for the design and development of TIA system components in August, 2002.

A number of privacy rights organizations, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), expressed concerns that the program would gather the personal information of private citizens indiscriminately and would not be held publicly accountable. While legislative negotiators in Congress (who terminated the project under DARPA) agreed, many of the programs developed under TIA are currently used to gather and analyze data at the NSA.

The "e-leash", damn things. I've turned around and driven back to get it when I leave it on the dresser.

"TEMPEST" technology on steroids. Jhikpghf

TEMPEST is a codename referring to investigations and studies of compromising emission (CE) (see Van Eck phreaking). Compromising emanations are defined as unintentional intelligence-bearing signals which, if intercepted and analyzed, may disclose the information transmitted, received, handled, or otherwise processed by any information-processing equipment. TEMPEST is a codename only and is not an acronym.

Compromising emanations consist of electrical, mechanical, or acoustical energy intentionally or by mishap unintentionally emitted by any number of sources within equipment/systems which process national security information. This energy may relate to the original encrypted message, or information being processed, in such a way that it can lead to recovery of the plaintext. Laboratory and field tests have established that such CE can be propagated through space and along nearby conductors. The interception/propagation ranges and analysis of such emanations are affected by a variety of factors, e.g., the functional design of the information processing equipment; system/equipment installation; and, environmental conditions related to physical security and ambient noise. The term "compromising emanations" rather than "radiation" is used because the compromising signals can, and do, exist in several forms such as magnetic- and/or electric field radiation, line conduction, or acoustic emissions.

Depending on device specifications, maximum effective range of use is ~50 meters. So if you must have one, leave it in the car when you're home.

I just found this using search. I would like to add that I sincerely believe that they/them (Those Hidden Eavesdropping Mofos) are doing the same thing with the HD TV's and our "Smart" appliances...possibly even our dumb appliances. I have found patents and news releases stating it is now possible to transfer data from you smart appliances (TV's, refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, phones, etc...) to THEM and you don't even need an internet connection or a cell phone. The data is transmitted from the moment you plug your appliance in...right over the power lines. Conceivably they could turn on a hidden MICROphone.

But scarier still is the insidious spy programs that can be downloaded for $15 and installed in a few minutes on just about anyone's cell phone. It's bad enough that we have big brother watching and therefore controlling our every move but now we are doing it to each other.

A friend of mine who is going through a divorce was given a new cell phone by her husband because he broke her old one (purposely twisting it until it broke). Later he apologetically went out and bought her a new one.

While she waited he was in another room "setting up " her new phone for her. We now believe he was installing one of these creepy programs. These programs allow the person to:

- Listen in on all or predetermined phone calls. The sneaky spy is called or receives a text each time the person he or she is spying on makes a call or a text. It logs the text and /or gives you third party access to the live call.

- Receive a "spycall". The sneaky spy can turn on the target microphone and listen to the victims conversations and surrounding noises wherever they are in the world. At any time. Even if the phone is off.

- The spy can track the victim knowing at all times where the victim is via gps

- Record all calls

- Intercept emails

- remotely control the "target phone" (victim)

- undetectable (hidden from directory lists and files)

I understand the usefulness if your spouse is cheating or you want to track your twelve year old for safety reasons. But I find it repugnant and creepy for any other use. It is illegal to do but it is used by millions of people everyday.

While the software is virtually undetectable there are signs you can watch for.

Unusual battery discharge.
Battery is warm even when not being used.
Screen comes on for no reason.
You're billed for more data than you think you've used.
Unusual clicking or other noises.
Increase in GPRS activity.
Slow performance.
Problems shutting down.

I cannot find any software to detect this crap. It seems to me a boatload of money could be made creating a counter product.

There are many programs out there but here is one of the most popular:

This is why I rarely use my cell phone anymore. I usually leave it at home. We have an old analog cell we keep in the car for emergencies. Other than that, life without "smart phone" is nice again..... I find myself looking around more and enjoying the world rather than looking down "checking" my smart phone like all the other sheep. I actually had to train myself out of using it, getting rid of facebook helped. Seriously, after a few years on FB, there is nothing new under the sun there and the majority of people that I had in my FB world were posting the same damn shit everyday. It gets boring after a while. I suppose if you are young its a wonderful way to build your world up, but as you get older you realize it better to have a few quality friends than a shit load of useless acquaintances.

I mean I am not that important... Anyone who is important to me knows where I am and how to get in touch with me.

People love their technology because it makes them feel important and it gives them a false sense of love/belonging... technology, in reality, isolates people.
