Keep in mind, those prison camps existed 148 years ago. The south wanted to "parole" those prisoners (i.e. they swear never to return to the field of battle) and exchange prisoners with the north as early as 1862, but the north refused - so the south was stuck with them.
With the southern economy in shambles and agriculture production at a virtual halt (except for war production), by 1864 most southerners were destitute and had a hard time feeding themselves, much less the "yankee" prisoners.
Don't get me wrong, I do not condone what happened at Andersonville or any other prison camp - north or south - and the Union treated prisoners just as badly. Google "Civil War + Camp Douglas".

so andersonville was just an example of a particular individual with the picture i posted. i know both sides were just as bad, and it shows the intellectual skill of these guys who jump on me saying the norht was just as bad, i know this...

Both sides did their fair share of evil shit .... General Nathan Forrest's Calvary raids in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania that burned farms and homesteads and General Sherman's march thru Georgia that did the same. But because they did it does not make it right, but they did do it - lesson learned ! We do no need to repeat this episode in US history.

One Union dispatch reports that Of 3,530 Native Americans who fought for the Union, 1,018 were killed, a phenomenally high rate.

It is estimated that over 110,000 civilians lost their lives on both sides due to direct combat actions (i.e. artillery shelling an area or sharpshooter casualties)
