chevy g-20 seems to be a pretty solid platform. my buddy has on that recently hit 280,000 miles but is now starting to act up...
advice: if the ignition actuator rod in the steering column breaks you could be screwed. you pretty much have to replace the whole column, and we had a hell of a time finding a new one. just my personal experience.

drifterSpirit Wrote:2300 for this van, looks awesome with all the work he put into it, pretty low kms, looks like he knows what he is doing, only thing that worries me is it's a 1978, how long will this thing last before it croaks ?
please dont post if you dont know much about autos, thanks.

kms.....
Photo number 2 was awesome.
Undercarriage looks decent. As long as there are no holes that is a plus. I would say if the engine runs good and the van drives ok 2300 isn't that bad.

Offer him 1800.00 to 2000,00 and use the rest for repairs. Compared to today's crap vans, I would go for it. Get everything greased, check the engine oil for water it will turn a milky white, check the radiator. Replacing the valve cover , oil pan gaskets are easy. Head gaskets unless you have mechanical skills ,and a torque wrench do not mess with them. check the transmission fluid should be pinkish, if dark you could have transmission problems.

Oh, you lot.
Just go buy it.
then its yours, to play and fuss over. you have a camper, so put it on blocks and take the wheels off. have a good look at it standing on blocks.
wright down Ideas, Like suspension upgrades, so you can leave the roadway with better clearences, onthing too flash as you do this on paper. then think of the engine and gearbox, what would it take to have it taken out and re-enginered. when you have done your paper home work, then look up parts if you like, but car club enthusiasts are best, your going to make an A-team like running gear for semi off road camping, but the engine needs port and polishing for running gas, as hydrogen will come, its only time, but if your motor can run a variety of gasses it gives an advantage. then you can look at hydrogen systems, and led lights for better power consumption, see boats for lights in cabin.
its a grand hobby, for after the paper drawings and such, put the wheels back on, and seek quotes for such works.
when you have a price list for the works, remember the outcome is to have a new from old. and with a cost structure, put some extra on the costs, and make a savings plan, fast term plan where you just power to a goal. then start the prodject. like pimp your ride. its all just doing what can work to get the end result. if you fiddle here and there, the job won't get done, if you save the cash for just that, then soon as the piggy bank reaches the mark, the camper goes in old, comes out new.
Its how us oldies do it, I would buy it, and sit in it, take it out, get to know it, but be saving for its big day. its not about the prise, its the journey

who ever said the oil pan has pressure on it doesn't know these engines at all, there's no pressure there other than the blowby of compression through the rings and it is vented or it would blow every oil seal out of it. The oil pressure comes from the oil pump that pumps oil to the bearings and the valvetrain, then it drips back down without any pressure on it.
just keep an eye on that dipstick and keep it in its operating range, you're going to have leaks on an engine that old, If the timing chain is loose a timing light will see it as the TDC mark will jump around.
It's either got a 350T or a 400T tannny, both good but the 400 is rock solid and will last forever with regular filter changes.
The van stripped down will weigh 2 tons, that alone will bring $600 at a scrapyard, the included stuff is a bonus and well worth it if you ask me, I'd just have the leaks fixed and enjoy many years of camping and going places.
