ive sorta glanced past threads on hydroponics or catfish water recycler/food grower. can something like that be reduced in size to like 1 or 2 catfish?

Sounds like all you need to do is do some math and scale down another's plans. If it fits your apartment, great. But we're not doing the maths for you - you are the one who has to be motivated for this.

also try to grow some no non poisonous edible mushrooms...

Grow duckweed in a modest aquarium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemnoideae ) with maybe some tilapia or catfish in the aquarium.
