Yes normally I would agree. However I think this is a case of biting the hand that feeds. We could have had safe and relatively non-polluting nuclear technology, but instead someone realized they could profit off the rarity (or novelty if you will) of uranium. We could have had this instead and no one would think twice about nuclear power being unsafe:

I don't think it really matters if it's thorium or not. The point is to create a system that does not create so many dangerous conditions that if there is a failure somewhere creates catastrophe. If we were smart enough we could probably create the same exact system for generating power from liquid magma flows and create no pollution and have no nuclear material involved.

But we can barely predict an earthquake or a volcano eruption so obviously nuclear is better for humans since it is more on a level we can almost control chuckle

No need to be nasty. I'm not advocating sinking Japan ffs. I'm wondering what they're going to do about it and that came to mind. Chill out. I'm not the man/group of men who decided it would be a good idea to build a nuclear plant on a dangerous fault by the sea.

NOW you are thinking. Not sure what all the intense pressures and forces of the earth might do to it but sending it out to some remote location in (or even outside) the solar system should let it harmlessly radiate out in space until it is harmless. But you don't see the mobilizing for that so one must assume money and politics are involved as usual. They could give a flying f*ck about human life (or any other for that matter).
