It works by learning.
I've known that, at least intuitively since I was 3 years old.
You make me wonder, how is it possible to not know that by (at least) the time you can read and write?

Here is my opinion . . .

Consciousness is the internal spark of energy that jump-starts the body into action and keeps it running. Death comes when the body is no longer able to sustain life. Since energy cannot be destroyed, that spark would continue to exist.

Consciousness is the big question. Why does it turn off when you are asleep you are still alive.

Science stays away from consciousness with a barge pole, top research stuff not for the public.

Philosophy deals with it, but science likes to quantify things and has problems with consciousness and emotions.

Emotions are just chemical reactions says science.
When you are depressed or insane it is just a chemical imbalance they say.

I can choose to be happy or sad, I can react or not react to outside stimuli it is still my choice.

If anyone can answer the "why" and "how" of consciousness, they should be given a Nobel prize.

Awareness doesn't need to learn but our awareness can.

Where does this "Awareness" come from?

I have seen peoples awareness after death, at their funerals. I don't need faith to know you go on after physical death I have seen it.

You can sense beyond the five senses if you learn to expand your consciousness, it is like tuning a radio.
We are tuned into this reality to perceive it, there is more.

Learn to feel with your mind.
Don't forget to guard yourself.

Wow, had exactly the same thought this week. Consciousness is a spark, like a spark plug. Sense data is the fuel, the mind an engine, to produce mental energy.

This is what stresses me, how I will maintain mental energy? My hunch is that excess fuel is everywhere, however, our minds are set-up to only notice novelty and embed what is already familiar. I'm putting it out there, if you can fight this process and 'see' novelty in the familiar, let your mind feedback on your surroundings, then you will have a lot more oomph.

Detaching consciousness from awareness seems to help.

Surrender to the moment, fight for the future!

Lucky . . .

Your dreams are part of consciousness. The brain continues to fire while sleeping. It is the body that shuts off.

I think consciousness and awareness are the same thing but you can tune you consciousness to notice or not notice things.
It is one of the objectives of meditation to block out your surroundings, to tune them out and then tune into other things in the universe other wavelengths.
And use you mind to create wavelengths like you do when you are communicating.
