Little fact about gnats: those clouds of gnats you see are actually orgies. Scream1

I had a long battle with gnats after a batch of bananas. They are finally gone, knock on wood. Don't use vinegar anywhere in your house as they are attracted to it. Which is why the aforementioned vinegar trap works.
But you do not need a soda bottle. This is the trap I used:

Glass bowl with a lip around it (to keep a rubber band from coming up off the bowl, the lip is important)

Saran Wrap
Rubber band
Toothpick
Apple cider vinegar works the best

Pour just a small amount of apple cider vinegar into the bottom of the bowl, you just need the smell of it, not so much a volume of it.

Put saran wrap tightly over the bowl, secure with a rubber band.

Take the tooth pick and poke holes in the saran wrap, make them just slightly bigger than the circumference of the toothpick, just big enough for the gnats to go into the bowl

They can get in, but don't really get back out unless you make the holes too big. But I squished them against the side of the bowl through the saran wrap. To make sure they didn't escape and to put them out of their misery.

Repeat this until you go a day of two without catching one.

Good luck to you. They are a horrible nuisance....

The gnats are probably fungus gnats.. harmless but the eggs and larvae are in the soil. They will eat the roots and probably could kill the plant.

You can let the soil thoroughly dry out to kill the larvae or you need to replace all the soil and wash out the pots with soapy water. Do this outside.

I was thinking soapy water spray but the gnats do not live on the plants like white flies and aphids.

Scratchinghead How about a vacuum with the under the fridge attachment on the hose?

yeah, I thought they were probably living in the soil. I used a bit of vinegar and water, and watered the plants with that, but it didn't do me much good. I've poured the bleach down drains, and tried the vinegar and soda down the drain...I'm gonna just buy more soil, and change pots I guess, and keep a bottle trap with vinegar out, and maybe after all that, they'll find someone else to bother...
thanks

I do a neem or pyrethrum drench of pots for the larvae.

Also diatomaceous earth on surface of pot will dessicate them

thats a different critter, those are most likely fruit flies, vinegar works on them, not so much on fungus gnats.
and you don't need all that crap, put vinegar in a bowl and add one drop of dish soap. The soap break the surface tension and makes them sink when they land in the vinegar.

gnats  Wrote: (01-27-2013 02:38 AM)
Last summer I left my houseplants in the shade outside. I am finding gnats now, hanging around my houseplants. One or 2 isn't a problem, but there's more.
How can I get rid of them? They are simple ivy plants...I've used vinegar and water, and that doesn't work.

Simples.... However some folk do report overpenetration to be an issue.

Haha! I'm so glad to be learning the various methods of catching them...(I have a "lipped bowl"...have to try it that way)
I do have some diatomaceaus (sp?) earth, and will add that and the gravel when I buy the new soil.

You guys have been awesome help as usual! Thanks

yeah, for the lizards or frogs I'll have to find if nothing else works.

GoGnats is a very effective method, organic and nontoxic. Dilute and use as a soil drench or spray.
