IIRC, not having to type "http://www." happened sometime around 2003/4.

We needed to replace the canopies on all of our EZ-Up Promo tents at work. The job fell to me. We wanted our website URL on the tent, and I wrote it all out to the vendor. The vendor wrote back, and said he'd save us money and drop the "http://www.", as it was no longer required.

I was pleasantly surprised.
