ships off socal coast
i live in the suburbs of los angeles about 20 minutes south of LAX and my girlfriend just pointed out a large number of ships, maybe half a dozen, off the coast. they all have intense lights illuminating the surrounding area including the sky, which are green in color. anyone know what's up

RE: ships off socal coast
would be very nice indeed. the number of ships is more like 10 and they are lined up like a blockade. the sky is wearing this eerie gradient of alien light, with a sliver of darkness, topped off by the orange glow of sodium street lights reflecting off the marine layer.

Large ships? It could be the Coast Guard either running night ops training, or maybe they are busting a boat with drugs, or hell maybe something crashed. Maybe listen to the scanners http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?stid=6 and pick where about you are to get a hint of what's going on.

i've seen search and rescue and other practice operations here before, but never at night and never with such an (admittedly subjective) ominous air about them. could be some coast guard night training. weird.

That was on Sat. though. Do you think they are still playing out in the water after that mishap? Which is horrible btw.

It's probably just the first wave of Chinese troops. Don't worry about it, Obama's got your back.

The LORD thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number,
and mighty is the army that obeys his command.
The day of the LORD is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?

thank goodness, i trust Obama unconditionally because he has my personal best interest in mind and is so far superior and differentiated from his 'opponent' in the upcoming election.

RE: ships off socal coast
Oil tankers actually have unload stations out in the water at some distance, they never"dock" per se.

They also stage them out in the water to be unloaded and in some cases they will actually sit out in the water till they get the price they want to get for the oil.

As strange as this sound the unloading and money exchange happen are on an EXTREMELY strict time schedule , under a VERy strict set of conditions according to VERY specific plans of trade that are hundreds and hundreds of years old.

That money exchange/bond and transfer of funds-- is made specifically --for example when the ship starts to unload before ANY oil is pumped the money MUST show in the account COMPLETELY processed before the pump switch is turned on.

Also , like I said Oil traders or other commodity traders can be waiting for something as simple as the DOLLAR exchange rate to hit a specific number before the exchange is made/ or that the commodity in question hits a certain value.

Some times that can take days-even months- and the traders know this and use it to advantage. The ship will literally become an island offshore , never moving.

There are so many circumstances and variables that it would be hard to EVER say for certain why they sit there because in effect they are protected for privacy contractually.

I understand that this may not answer your question but then again maybe it does.
